Arrow Who represents Toronto Raptors at Slam Dunk Contest: DeMar DeRozan or Sonny Weems?

Um, I like thses two guys, but T Mac and Vince they aren't.

Quote:
A decade ago, teammates Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady brought the Toronto Raptors fame and glory with their aerial antics at the Slam Dunk Contest.

Of course, Carter became champion and, along the way, turned Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith into ‘The Broken Record’ because the TNT broadcaster could only say ‘It’s over’ when watching the young guard perform.

Ten years later, another pair of Raptors are hoping to duplicate Carter and McGrady’s success at the Slam Dunk Contest at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

But politics won’t allow both DeMar DeRozan and Sonny Weems to compete at the February event. After all, in 2000, Carter and McGrady had profile as rising superstars, while DeRozan is a blue-chip rookie learning the pro ranks and Weems just cracked Coach Jay Triano’s rotation.

So it’s DeRozan or Weems. Not both.

In terms of athleticism in the open-court, this duo reminds many of Carter and McGrady ’s early days with Toronto. Hopefully, the Raptors’ newest pair have a happier ending than ‘V.C.’ and ‘T-Mac’.

Clearly they are not the second coming of Vince and T-Mac, but better than what we had last season. It seems as if Weems has a slight edge on creativity and even athleticism, however for some reason I'd prefer to see DeRozan in it. Maybe both can get the nod, it would certainly improve the league wide perception of the Raptors, even if it's essentially an irrelevant contest. The kind of swagger and confidence that would likely be seen through the two in the contest would be something that is not often connected with the Raptors. It couldn't hurt the competition either, as two players from the same team add an interesting dynamic to the event.

Derozan; it may boost his confidence substantially.

Weems will pass the ball to DeRozan in the partner dunk

My vote is for DeRozan. Someone posted a youtube of some of his pre-NBA dunks and they were good enough to warrant a spot in the contest.

I think comparing them to Carter and T-Mac is a shame.

These guys aren't even close.

It's unfair to place labels like that on guys. And do we really need our so called "Blue chip" 2-guard to feel like he has to duplicate what Vince Carter did?

Do we really need Sonny Weems, who seems to have shed his all show, no go game style in favour of a lunch pail hard working and effective NBA player's game to start regressing into putting time and energy into worrying if his next dunk is gonna be a 10?

+1

The fact is Weems hasn't proved shit yet, to me he's still a scrub until this is his play for a more prolonged amount of time. As for Derozan, he's not even close to VC, so that label is rediculous. We're not a .500 team and the last thing we need now that they're playing well is distract them with dunk contest talk.

I agree with you in that if we were to vote yes or no, we both vote no.

That said, Weems has been more than a "scrub".

He brings a lot of the things we have been whining about for three years to the table. He and Johnson both. What Weems is, is what Jack calls a "ball player".

He ain't a star.
He ain't a stat getter.

He's a baller.

Put 5 ballers on the floor and you win more than lose.
Put five scrubs on the floor and you have Toronto's starting five on many nights.

Seems to me like DeRozan has had his heart set on the dunk contest for a while now. It would be a shame if he didn't get to participate.

It would be ashame? He's 20yrs old, if he's that good he's got alot of time to participate. And maybe if he's a little older he'll do a better job once he does get in.

We thought Moon was a baller this time two years ago as well. It's a little early to pronounce him a great player or "baller". I've seen this too often before. A few good weeks and everyone thinks he's more then he is. I hope he continues this, but i'm in a wait and seen mode.

I'm not entirely sure what the strict definition of "baller" is, but Weems is a better athlete than he is a basketball player at this point. Add a consistent mid-range jumper and a handle and he's got the potential to be a real player.
I guess the exact same thing can be said of Derozan as well.
DD's got way more hype surrounding him than Weems. He'll be the one in the contest.

i thought moon was a baller for about a month, then i realized he only moonlighted as one from time to time. when that gig fell through he aptly took up the position of chucker.

By Baller I mean he's a competitor.

Guys like that compete, they do little things, geti lanes, set proper screens, they hustle, they work thier man, thy dog them on defence.

Moon was never that guy, ever, his defence NEVER impressed me at all. He dunked well.

Then he stopped even doing that.

Guys like Weems can be glue guys. I'm not saying he is a lock to be this type of player, he's just looking more and more like he can be that type of player is all. I just don't like the idea of keeping these guys in the mode of "flash dunking machines" when thats maybe 2-3 plays in a game. The other 50 or whatever possesions require ballers.

I don't think the players represent their teams in the dunk contest.

Stop it already with Moon. He got a lot of blocks and rebounds at his position. And his shot percentages were good.
Not his fault that Jose couldn't do alley-oops or drive to paint for dish like TJ could.

i'll take derozan in the contest as i think he's the more versatile dunker. Weems doesn't seem like much of a 2 footed leaper plus he seems to have small ass hands, its limits you. Weems is quicker for sure but quickness doesn't mean shit in a dunk contest. Also , the way weems shoots all stiff, i'm just not convinced he has much body control though maybe i'm underestimating his athleticism

Derozan however i feel is an even better dunker then he's shown not that the brad miller spike or his numerous oops that seem effortless we slouches

if you add a consistent mid-range jumper and a handle to quite all the players and they all are real players
