Where are you as a Raps fan?

I ask this question because, hell, I don't even know where I am anymore.

There was a point in my time where all I did was talk about this team, watch this team, read news about them etc.

I can't even watch the games anymore as I don't think I've sat through an entire game yet. It started happening about two years ago when I saw the same stagnate team, doing the exact same thing over and over and over again. The offense was predictable, the occasions of lack of effort frustrating, the defense that waited to go on offense atrocious.

Chris Bosh leaving, didn't make me less of a fan either. I didn't care that he left. I saw him for 7 years here and by the end I didn't care any longer.

BC's constant wheeling and dealing don't interest me because even I have trouble remembering who has played on this team and who hasn't.

The drama that surrounds this team has become a joke. From VC, to Rafer Alston, to Marcus Camby, to Chris Bosh and Turkoglu. It's one gigantic joke after another.

And now? I can't even watch some games (if I wanted to) because of television rights. It seems just to add another nail in this coffin.

Really, I still watch the NBA (the Jazz, OKC, LA, SA and Knicks being the teams I watch the most) but my following of this team is dying a slow death and I don't know if I'm the only one.

So, now you know where I am as a fan of this team. Am I the only one here? Where are you?

js12 12-28-2010 11:00 AM

I'll be honest, I've only been a fan since 2006-2007.

You may recall the Raptors going on a huge run in December and forward.

What started out as me channel flipping to the Raptor game during commercial breaks turned into me watching the entire game. Really, I loved it and watched virtually every single game ever since.

Few years later, almost at 2010, I'm a huge Raptor fan. But I do admit, the team is frustrating to watch. Sadly, the best Raptor basketball I watched was still 06-07.

But whatever, once we get Irving, we're going all the way. :mischief:

sixel 12-28-2010 11:08 AM

I was always waiting for the game to start since the start of the 06-07 season

since the all star break of last year this team is boring to watch

but the month of november of this season was entertaining

now it ain't

ClingRap 12-28-2010 11:20 AM

I don't even miss watching the games anymore. If it's on, I'll take a peak, but this team blows up and down the roster. And, I don't see it even being able to remotely compete for the next few years.

I've been a fan of the team since day one, but the years or losing, and the instability in coaching, front office, and personnel has left me seriously sour on the prospects.

Not to mention, that they can't seem to find any luck with anything.

Deez 12-28-2010 11:20 AM

I still have hope only because there are assets to be used, a pick to be made and only $45 on the hook for next year. Current lowest in the league is about $43 million. So what I see playing now is not going to be the team I see in July. And I don't expect the current young players to get any worse.

Ciao Raptors! 12-28-2010 11:21 AM

A true fan of Raptors never leaves the team even in times of difficulty...

js12 12-28-2010 11:25 AM

But no doubt this season thus far has been a failure.

I don't mean that record-wise, most of us knew we were going to be bad. The development from our younger players has been disappointing.

DeRozan barely improved- his free throw shooting is questionable, he can't consistently shoot jump shots, he is still turnover prone, can't defend regularly and can't carry a team.

Sonny is still terrible from three point range, still has terrible decision making and has become less willing to play defence and hustle.

fresh n' spicy 12-28-2010 11:49 AM

i agree with claudius until december of this year i was watching every single raps game in full but now i just watch parts of them just to check the score. I am more into watching the game on tnt, espn, and nbatv (other teams which actually know how to play basketball)

MrClutch 12-28-2010 11:52 AM

im still with the raptors as a fan, ill stick with them till the day i die

MikeToronto 12-28-2010 11:59 AM

I've been with them since the very early days of an emerging franchise. True, it's hard to watch a lot of games this season, but that's not the first time and neither, I am sure, is it the last one. Check out my status message for a deeper philosophical stance. ;)

jeffb 12-28-2010 11:59 AM

I will always be a Raptor fan and an NBA fan.

LX 12-28-2010 12:01 PM

This season is just too much like the season of Mike James. It's a step back when for a few years I was looking for a step forward. I'm tired of cheering for individual players, and that would seem to be all this team has ever really offered, save for that 06-07 season, and that one season they went past the first round. Believe it or not, I was tired of cheering for Bosh alone, and desperately wanted to be able to see a team come together around him. It's extremely frustrating that the promise we saw with Vince's team, and the promise we saw in '06, didn't even really get a chance to show anything but a lot of disappointment. And now there seems to be very little of any kind of promise, and that is hard to fathom considering the credentials Colangelo was supposed to bring here.

That's why I want as many draft picks as possible. Blowing it up for real would be so much better than the constant reshuffling. Trade half this team for essentially picks, and I'd be happy. We need to see some promise of something coming together from the ground up, and then be able to add veterans. Until then, I keep watching, but the games tend to be nothing much more than background noise, not unlike watching the fireplace channel.

DuCa00795 12-28-2010 12:03 PM

What was wrong with the Mike James days?

Gurk 12-28-2010 12:03 PM

I am still a true fan but I do admit that I am not avid in watching the raps games anymore. Sometimes I just don't feel like watching them and I remember before I wouldn't dare miss a game.

Windex 12-28-2010 12:25 PM

dont think Ive seen a Raps game in a month...sort of forgot about the team
but I haven't been watching NBA ball that much this year and if I do, its one of the top matvhups

Crpe 12-28-2010 12:47 PM

I watch every single game I can. That's frustrating sometime (like the Pistons one...)but this season is better than last year IMO.
I don't care if they lose, I wait for the big move from Colangelo. I wait for the GUY, a leader on & off the court. A prospective Hall of Famer...
Things can turn quickly, look at Boston 2006-2007...
Memphis after the Gasol trade...
yeah, ups and downs are killing me. JO, Marion, Turkoglu ... That's a lot of disappointment. But I see the end of the tunnel. Make that big move BC!!!

'trane 12-28-2010 01:02 PM

still love this team and watch every game that i can. any time i start to waver i just think back to the days when we had no team and i dreamed of having an nba franchise in toronto. these are the times we need to support this team. we'd be a lot worse off without the raps.

Trane,

This is pretty much where I am too. I was an actual Ball player way back when the whispers started about expansion to Canada, and then, the actual expansion. My friends and I who were massive ball fans, just.... if there were "fantastic Mr. Foxes", only, Rats, thats the level of gym rats we were. You name the Basketball experience you can have, we had it, everyday, for at least 3 hours a day, often more.

We were at the YMCA one day talking to Mike Smrek (some of you might member Mike, he played for the Lakers) He was telling us that if Toronto ever got a team we should thank our lucky stars. He was right.

Remember the kick out to Alvin for the first Hoop ever??? I do, and his last name wasn't Williams!!!!! ;)

Remember The 72 win Bulls.... ya so Does Damon Stoudamire, fondly.

Remember Zan Tabac? Remember how he could hit the top of the back board with a baby hook from 2 feet, painfully, I remember that too. And Vincenzo, and watching Carlos drive around is a bloody Bentley, AFTER he'd been traded during the summer because dammit, he liked Toronto.

I remember those years fondly because back then, we truly felt and knew how big of an underdog our Team was. Not just because of players, or talent, or management and coaching, but because of cultural ignorance and media ignorance. I used to play basketball against Greg Newton, he was good enough to lead the Blue Devils in the Big Tourney, yet, the announcers still made it sound like we had no idea what Basketball even was up here. We took it personally, because we used to play pick up games against the kids from Buffalo, and Niagara falls, and they weren't any better than us.

I guess it's what you grow up enjoying. I was lucky enough to be around for the start of a franchise that may be around for my Grandkids. I know they are terrible, and I certainly do grill them every time I get a chance. But for me, like many of the older guys here, it's simply tough love for a team we still love, but can't afford to get to attached too.

I'm still A Toronto Raptor fan. I always will be. It's no fun when they suck, but if you are like me, its the little things.....

- watching a young guy make a good play, like davis, when he out quicks a guy on his drop step.
- forgetting that Bargnani is at a grade 11 level defensively, because he just blew your mind at how utterly unstoppable he can be offensively when he puts his mind to it. Trust me, you won't see many players that can do what he can in your lifetime. Enjoy the glimpses, he may never fully evolve, but hell, the glimpses are sublime.
- Seeing a guy like Triano succeed. He was a basketball hero for a few of us. A Canuck that could play with the best in the world. And now, we get to see a good man live his dream as the coach of the only Canadian franchise. Little fact for you, give that guy a contending roster, he's coach of the year, the dude is a fantastic coach.
- Vince Carter, Damon, T-Mac, Bosh, Turk, Mo Pete, Chauncey, hate these guys for having the nuts to bail on a situation they hated, I know I have hated um for it, but they were fun while we had them (well, maybe not Chauncey).
- seeing glimpses from guys that wouldn't have had a chance elsewhere.... and enjoying them when they came.... Who DIDN'T love Keon??? Pops??? Big ole Garth, Menghe...... ESPOSITO!!!! These guys are all shit, but they were good here and there and we loved um.

There's a lot for me to go into, so I'm stopping as I know most you guys havent even read this far. But ya know, fuck the rest of the league, my team is in my home, and I am cheering for the hometeam.

Always.
