why would another team give up value for lowry when he is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year?

Sometimes, a team can make the trade if they can sign an extension with the incoming player when the trade happens, if the destination city is particularly appealing for the player to play for. Plus many teams would choose to work a S&T if they're losing an UFA, which I'm assuming might be one of the Raptors options.

FYI:

MLE is 5 M, not 7 M.

Assuming Gay and Lowry walk next summer, and we waive Daye, because he's terrible, but keep both Stone and Buycks as useful backup PGs, we are looking at the following roster:

DD 9.5
Amir 7
Fields 6.25
Novak 3.4
JV 3.7
Hansbrough 3.3
Ross 2.8
Stone 0.9
Acy 0.9
Buycks 0.8

Owed a total of 39.3 M (including the 0.6M cap hit from Camby's buyout). That's 10 guys, meaning 1 roster hold of 0.5 M, making the total cap space about 19 M to get at least two guys. Not bad.

The way that cap space starts to disappear really quickly is if we try to keep this group together. Gay picking up his option uses up the entirety of the space. Lowry re-signing for 8 M puts us 4 M short of the tax. Signing two more players puts us at the tax line, assuming they are scrubs like Gray or something, whereas use of the MLE and BAE puts us about 4 M over the tax (at the apron).

Sometimes teams are looking to win RIGHT NOW - and those sorts of teams take risks like trading for a player near the end of his contract, purely to help them this year. Also note that if the player is in a winning situation, they are likely to re-sign there, and since the player's Bird rights get traded with him, the new team would be able to offer whatever they need to to keep the player. No guarantees, but big spenders and really good teams don't usually need guarantees.

agreed, but what value are they going to give you? a non-lottery pick? cap space? a young guy that can't crack their winning rotation?

that all depends on the player and his expiring contract. I could see getting pick that is outside lottery for Lowry

If the playoffs started tomorrow....

Toronto would be the 6th seed.

Until a team uses cap space, they won't renounce those rights, even though they are meaningless. So whenever we use cap space they'll be waived immediately, freeing up their cap holds.

Unless you're using cap space, they are meaningless, since they don't even count against the tax calculation.

Last year Tobias Harris got traded for a 6mil expiring Reddick, this year Giannis Antetokounmpo will get traded for lowry.

So - the beginning of next year.

Unless you count summer league, because Wiggins is going to kill it in summer league.
This has to be one of the funniest posts in RF history.

Plus the posters status adds to the hilarity:
