to get who? another role player at $7-8 mil?

1) Look for a team that's in need of a back-up centre because of injuries and send Gray for an expiring minimum in return.

2) Try an Amir, 2nd for Wilson Chandler. If it doesn't work out, look to trade him elsewhere, but don't be too pressed to do so as we have the option to amnesty him in the offseason if needed.

3) Try to package Kleiza in a Bargnani trade or move him for any expiring. I'm thinking the Suns might do a Kleiza for Wesley Johnson.

4) Try trading Fields in a Bargnani package. He played will with Dantoni. If no team will offer us an expiring, we have to wait it out and try to build his value up again.

2013 cap hit
Gray: 2.7 million
Amir: 6.5 million
Kleiza 4.6 million
Fields: 6.25 million

This opens up roughly 20 million dollars in capspace. It doesn't mean we have to use it all or overpay for a free agent. We can preserve some of the space for subsequent years. We at least have options heading into the offseason to make some moves to improve our roster, beyond just the mid-level. There's a chance we might not retain our pick, so it's best to have some more flexibility in terms of free agent options.

Moving only two of those pieces before trade deadline: Kleiza and Gray, plus amnesty option on Amir (IF NEEDED) provides 14 million dollars. It still gives us room with Fields here.

Trading all of them actually opens up more than 20 million dollars in room. Moving only 2 of them (Kleiza and Gray), plus the option to amnesty Amir in the offseasn opens up 14 million dollars. We can get more than a role player at 14-15 million dollars.

i understand that, but what's our track record in terms of improving this team via free agency? we end up with over-priced role players and end of the road creaky veterans.

so i ask again, to get who? who is going to want to join this mess of a team? who do you target?

In the past, BC overpaid for free agents and he is known to do so. Kapano was done so with mid-level. Turkoglu overpaid, but Blazers were willing to offer him 500 k less. I obviously don't endorse the Turk signing. BC did clear space to go after Nash when he was with the Suns. But with our present situation and current roster, do you really feel comfortable with this roster plus a mid-level player heading into next year? Right now, if we keep our roster intact heading into the summer, we have no capspace and no pick, and all we have is the mid level.

Clearing up capspace gives us options, when are options are currently limited. Does it mean we have to overpay for someone? No. It gives the next GM (if one is hired) more flexibility to improve the roster. It also doesn't mean we use all the space. I would make a run at Paul Millsap if the price and terms are right. At least we can position ourselves to make a run at him by clearing space, whereas we don't have that option right now.

I hope we lose all of those games, just maybe something will happen. If we go on a winning streak NOTHING will be changed.

No free agent of any merit would sign here until the ship starts heading in the right direction, unless you want to overpay to a greater degree of stupidity than we've ever seen.

Unfortunately, we're going to need to identify 5-6 players we're comfortable going forward with. The rest must be shipped out for draft picks/and or mediocre players on short term or expiring contracts. One of the draft picks has to be a #1 pick to start.

Any player we trade for has to have a high motor.

And Colangelo can't be allowed to do the trading. His judgement of players is totally out to lunch.

There's light at the end of the tunnel, but the tunnel is 3 years long.

Yea, AB and his "great" shooting % in the 30s will somehow make a difference against the Nets. Your defending of AB is getting nauseating. He is a 6th man at best. He won't make a difference.

The benefits of clearing space to go after someone in the offseason is twofold. One to make a run at a free agent in 2013 if the price is right. Two, we end up clearing out some trash even if we don't sign anyone. This gives us options throughout the season as well. We will be under the cap and can absorb a contract for that year and take a pick back in the process to re-build for the future. This will send a TPE back to the other team. We can use the space to acquire a young player with potential that a team wants to unload. We also give our younger players some more playing time. We also have the option to preserve the space for 2014. The benefits of clearing space extend beyond just the luxury of being able to sign a free agent.
