![]() They'd never give us Deng for Calderon. Last summer, people were talking about sending them a rotation player and our 8th pick. An expiring Calderon, who won't have the same value next year after Rose returns, would not get it done.
A few weeks ago, for shits and giggles, I actually made a trade proposal involving Calderon and Chicago. A couple of people claimed Chicago would not want him. In the short term, I think he could really help them win more and to get a top 3 playoff seed, so that they are in a better position to make some noise in the playoffs when Rose returns. The rest of their team is very good defensively and could cover for him. He is a substantial offensive upgrade over a beat-up Hinrich who is struggling and not the same player since his injuries. Getting salaries to work and making it worthwhile could be a sticking point. If we are going to get a quality return from Chicago, it might have to be a bigger deal, possibly involving a 3rd team. If the Bulls are going to give up a starter, it's likely going to be Boozer. As we saw last night, he still has some game. But his contract is horriawful, so we'd want to shed some salary if we ever took him on, like sending Bargnani to a third team. Also Ed has played a lot better since I proposed that hypothetical trade, so taking back Boozer looks less attractive, as it would take away Ed's minutes and hinder development. If we could put the salary issues aside, I'd want the 1st round pick Charlotte owes Chicago. That's an asset that could prove valuable in the future. It has some protections for a few years, but eventually becomes unprotected. As we've seen over the years, even when Charlotte makes a bit of progress with a good move or two, they screw it up by shooting themselves in the foot with other blunders. It would be nice to have a future pick owed to us from a franchise like that. If we keep it, we might not see the value for a while, so it's a trade for the future. But there is always the possibility of packaging it in some other trade, as other teams no doubt would want to bet against Charlotte, like how OKC probably saw potential high value in betting against us through the pick Houston had from the Lowry trade. +1 |

If we are trading for a pick, we'd need to take back at least Jose's contract value (10.56M) in filler, and, frankly, I can't come up with a combination from their team that fits that bill if you assume Noah, Deng, Rose, Rip and Boozer are off-limits (or undesirable). Hinrich, Gibson and Belinelli are their next 3 biggest contracts, and they only total about 8 million. Even IF those three made enough to work as filler (and the Bulls would be willing to part with them AND a pick to rent Jose for a year), the Raps would need to waive a couple players to make the trade work. Honestly, only a Boozer + pick for Jose salary dump makes sense, though that would suck for the Raps. Maybe a Boozer + pick for Jose + Kleiza deal? That removes long term salary commitments, plus gives them another SF/PF to "play" behind Gibson and Deng. Or a Boozer + pick for Bargs deal? That cuts a chunk of salary off their tax concerns, though they'd just be downgrading their overpaid PF. |
