Default What if MU Wanted to Add to the Core?

On the weekend, my friend and I were pondering the following: If MU surprised everyone by deciding to add to the core instead of dealing players like Lowry, which player or players could realistically be acquired this year and who would make the team more competitive now and into the future?

Obviously, James, Durant, Harden, etc. aren't realistic options. But one name I had suggested was Kevin Love, who could be available as he has privately expressed his frustration with the Timberwolves' inability to get to the playoffs.

He's 25 years old and has two more years left on his contract. He doesn't need to constantly have his ball in his hands to be productive, and he's a solid rebounder. He would be a great fit next to JV. He's not a great defender, though. Any package would have to include Amir and the team's first-round pick.

Pau Gasol would be a good fit, but he would be purely a rental and the cost to acquire him could be high.

Any other names to think about? Of course, this is all likely a pipe dream.

If love could defend I'd be all for it. But he can't. You can't trade away the defensive anchor of the team for someone who is arguably the worst defensive powerforward in the game

Maybe we should ask why Love hasn't been able to get the Timberwolves to the playoffs.....

He plays with a PG that can't shoot in the WC.

Raps need a young power forward for the future. I was a big Amir fan at the beginning of the season, but he is having a sub-par season. Maybe all those years have caught up. Can we get a Greg Monroe?

Paul Pierce was ridiculous last night; Amir was visibly frustrated with the fact that Pierce was able to hit a lay-up over him 3 or 4 times; Amir was there, but Pierce would crank his arm back and shoot the layup from a ridiculous angle. And then he was knocking down threes with just a bit of space.

Patterson comes on because Amir is getting lit up and immediately leaves Pierce far more wide open then he ever was when Amir was on him.

It was just a genuinely tough match-up.

He's struggled two games in a row as a PF against a small-ball lineup. I thought the team actually kind of struggled in both those scenarios and that Casey should have matched small for small with JV not looking very good imo.

Against Griffin, Amir guarded well the first three possessions of the game. When Jordan subbed off and the Raps stayed big, that's when Griffin got going.

He's shown the ability to neutralize some of the best PF in the league, he's not somebody I would give up on.

munroe is the only one that really intrigues me.

mkg or hayward for a steal of a contract would be nice fits too.

we have no assets to improve, that's the main reason many of us wanted to tank. Say monroe is available, what can we trade for him (outside picks)? Ross, JV are our best assets with demar and lowry having some limited value behind.

Our best hope to improve the core is through the draft, we'll be in the late teens, so we'd have to get lucky. At worst, we need to come out with a strong rotation player and ideally another one in the 2nd round. It will be another year until we really accumulate enough young assets to start thinking trades.

Of course, if we get get monroe for say amir and a future lottery protectde pick, I would go for it - but I think they'd want a lot more than that.

I'm very intrigued by Gasol though, was thinking about that recently - if we could maybe get him cheap, around 10m on a 3 year contract, that would be really good. But I really doubt his market value is that low, he will get 14+ I think.

Gasol would be great. He has unbelievable talent and a huge amount of post moves he could teach Jonas. He's a great teammate, a savvy veteran, has championship pedigree and he's someone you could legitimately throw the ball down to, watch him go to work and not cringe so much. A few things that bother me is his age(for a long term contract) and his defence. He probably wants another ring too. I think he's one of the better options though.

We already have a good, young core that will improve internally. That's why we never needed to tank. There may always be a way to improve through trades, or striking in the FA market in 2015 when we have some space, but right now I don't think there are any big splashes to make.

He's gonna be 34 this summer. I'll be surprised if he gets $14 mill+. I have a hard time seeing any team with that much space giving it to a 34 year old Gasol. Maybe he's used to facillitate a trade for the Lakers at the deadline. Then I could see a new team with his birds rights possibly re-signing him for more than 10 this summer, on a two year deal.

he is older, but he's aging well and hasn't had major health problems
look at the deal manu got, and he was in much worse shape
and gasol's game will age well as well, his shooting and high IQ will only get better, he relies on height and skill more than speed and strength. His defense will slip though, but offensively he'll be a force for 2-3 more years, health permitting.

When MU was asked this very question a few days ago on an interview on The Fan, he didn't answer the question, but he gave a very sinister laugh that suggested there was a very real possibility that we become buyers before the deadline.....
