What is happening with JV?

I am not knocking on the guy, I am a big fan, but the fact is that he has been playing poorly as of late. Of course the easiest answer would be that it's because he is not getting a lot of playing time due to foul trouble, but it feels like he is not playing as effectively as he did in those limited minutes before.

What do you think are the objective reasons for this? Simple loss of form? Tough schedule? Loss of confidence? No rhythm? Some other reasons?

Is it something that you worry about?

Cheers, and GO RAPTORS! :yeah:

EggsToTheBBQ 12-10-2012 09:24 AM

He looks tired.

I think it's probably that simple.

wchoi213 12-10-2012 10:08 AM

Probably lost all his hopes with this franchise already...

FLO 12-10-2012 10:19 AM

He realized he's going to be covering for Bargnani defensively for the next 10 years and lost all hope. ;)

creative1mm 12-10-2012 10:31 AM

well.. he is not really an offensive option, just there to be a presence down low.. and he doesn't get allot of help from Bargnanni.. takes on a huge load for a rookie

LOG 12-10-2012 10:52 AM

I think he deserves to get more involved offensively, he rolls to the basket very hard and our guards rarely reward him with the ball. Maybe few more touches in the post, he is fairly efficient so couple extra shots from JV shouldn't hurt us and it would be a big confidence boost to him.

In Europe you play the weekend and some Wednesday. In the NBA, you play very often (sometimes two days in a row), with all the travels...

He has to accustom to this.

Lithuanian league games are twice a week, VTB league once a week, and Euroleague once. Not saying it compares to nba, but it does end up being 4 games a week.

He's getting acclimated, and hitting a bit of a wall. And he likely hates the losing. And if the team is splintering then maybe something like that shows up where you have a rookie that is part of the future, but not with enough invested yet to be able to help hold things together.

Tomas 12-10-2012 11:12 AM

He's paired with Bargnani, that's tough for a rookie as he have to defend against two players now. Starting with Lowry doesn't help either as he ignores JV being open under the basket and waving hands like crazy, well this accounts for almost all the team, Raptors are not known for passing much..

I think it would work better for him to start from the bench together with Calderon. JC doesn't have a tendency to go 1 against 5 like Lowry, passes the ball more often and his play style overall better for JV. In 2nd unit with say Ed instead of Bargnani there would be less gaps left and so on. Casey should try that few games to see how it goes, I'm sure it would just give JV more confidence.

JoeyJoJo Shabbadu 12-10-2012 11:44 AM

Teams are going right at him to put him on the bench because he's shown he's good. That ...and he's never allowing an easy lay-up and on this team, there are far too many lapses so he's forced to take fouls for other people's mistakes.

i don't think that's right, but if it is, it's the end of everything:

the only hope for this franchise lost all his hope with this franchise :cookie:

Val is one of the reasons I believe Casey is failing the team. The guy is enthusiastic, works his tail off at both ends of the floor, tries to establish a position in the post pretty much every trip down the floor, and yet doesn't get the ball very often, having really no role other than abandon his hard established post position only to come back up, set a screen in the high post and then try to roll back to the basket with very little hope of getting the ball. Frustrating... :(

If they decide to rebuild, they need to start with a better offensive coach.

Zalgiris 12-10-2012 01:06 PM

JV had similar downswing during summer, after long season in europe, seasons I should say, couse he kept playing year after year, every summer with U teams without no rest. In Olympics he played very little because coach was a total moron like Casey is now.
I agree with most opinions in this thread, fatigue and disappointment in Lowry, Derozan and Casey. Those two guys never pass to JV and Casey doesn't do shit about it.

FLO 12-10-2012 01:18 PM

lol

Can't believe people are angry over JV not getting passes or being part of the offense. He's raw as hell and physically weak. He'll be a huge part of our future, but to blame Lowry or DD for his struggles is retarded. JV should focus on hustle/effort baskets only at this point and just get experience. His time will come.

jeffb 12-10-2012 01:24 PM

Heavy schedule
Inconsistent playing time (some of it due to foul trouble)
Rookie wall
He's 20yrs old

"His time will come" is not good enough reason for mentioned Lowry, DD etc to go go against multiple defenders and make stupid shots instead of passing the ball to open JV.

Zalgiris 12-10-2012 03:26 PM

"His time will come" is a bad thing to say. Who's time you think is now? Guys that won't be in this team for long, like Bargnani or Lowry? or a guy who is future of this team? You want bright future newer to come by skipping it and saying it's not the time yet? You should want it here and now!
Why the F should we wait for anything, start giving JV 40 minutes a game, build offense on him. The sooner he becomes beast the better. This season is screwed anyway. And the next one. And many more if nothing changes (Casey, Bargnani!!).

Pretty much this.

Teams know what he's about now and they're taking advantage.
