Default What happened to the defence?

So, I don't have a large sample size to go off of right now. I think I've watched 4 games completely, but I've noticed that our defence in general has been more lax and just not moving fluidly. I've noticed a few more cheats on plays, especially on the perimeter. We're doing a good job of protecting the rim in general, but I just don't see the same tenacity I saw last preseason and season in general.

Am I the only one seeing this? I feel like to incorporate more offence we're sacrificing defence. We need to get back to what works.

According to some recent articles, our defense is on par with last year's.

We have a more defensive talented team in lowry fields val and ross. Depending more on man as opposed to our zone help defense last season.

pretty much. Our only problem defensively has been our 1st quarters for the most part. We need to get off to better starts and we'll be fine. Last night was a prime example, Memphis shot 60% the first quarter and scored 36pts, the last 3 quarters they shot 39% and scored 70pts. If they played the same way in the first quarter that they did the final 3 quarters they give up around 95pts.

Statistically, that's fine.

I'm just noticing some bad habits right now that I didn't notice last year.

Again, I notice some more cheating on plays. Some guys are playing defence with their arms rather than moving their legs. Some guys are a little lackadaisacal in terms of their rotation. I will say our bigs have done a reasonably good job. This isn't even a first unit, or starters debate, this to me is just more of a habits issue.

I'm guessing it's really just guys getting used to eachother and getting cobwebs out. Three out of the five starters are new this year.

We traded (gave away) our best defender from last season. What did you expect?
If you talk of D as #1 priority, but don't bother resolving issues with #1 defender, let him go, let our worst defender get away with murder, what message can you possibly send to the rest of the team?

aslong as we're getting the points, it doesnt really matter imo. we had so many 70-80 point games last season, ugly to watch. Somehow in the preseason we found ways to score, 120 pts? lol. has to be one of the top scoring games so far this pre

It's obvious our first quarter D suffers with Lowry in place of Jose.... maybe we made a mistake!

you mean 0 games is a small sample size? It's pre-season, I don't think I remember a year when there was so much talk about pre-season games ...

Pre-season can't be used to judge a team, coaches probably try all sorts of things and combinations just to see what works and what doesn't. And that doesn't only apply to lineups, but defensive schemes, game pace, how we handle different matchups and so on. Add to this the fact that veteran players don't usually go anywhere near 100%, rookies are just getting their first taste of the NBA, new players are trying to integrate and learn the new schemes- it's all a huge mess.

I get that you're trying to look at the little things, but it just isn't relevant. The conditioning, focus and even the coaches probably ask players to try different things to evaluate their efficacy.

a more uptempo offense is going to appear to create breakdowns on D because there will be more broken plays as the speed will make things more hectic in general
as well, uptempo will mean shots taken earlier in the shot clock and hence the opponent will receive the ball back more often leading to more possessions for both sides, which in turn leads to a higher score, so it may appear as though we are giving up more points yet the efficiency level is probably still the same

First it's only preseaon ...
I'm with Jeff ... the first quarters were shit and this same trend existed last year. Overall, I didn't see much difference between last year and this year. Lots of new players and people learning their roles.
