Default What do you think the plan is?

Anything can happen if a too-good-to-be-true deal comes their way, but for my money, it's:

Don't tank!

Evaluate all assets this coming season and build a handpicked team of performers that can then be added to with more spending. (opposite the NY Knicks, which is to spend it all now and see if it fits) I think that has always been the plan from MU's start, rather than it being something that just evolved recently. Why?

-every new player (Richardson, Camby, Novak, Stone) brought in is with an eye to expiring this year, becoming an expiring next year or easily moved.
-expiring this year also, Kleiza (why amnesty in an evaluaton year? Save that chip) Lowry (part of a championship core when healthy and in shape?) Gray (big body)
-don't have to move them all, but expirings next year: Gay, Amir, Fields = 32 mil.
-Bargnani had already been identified as a having no heart, needed no more evaluation and served no purpose in having accountability on the team. Bye.
-JL3, AA, no more evalutaion necessary. Bye.
-even Casey's expiring so there was no need to change coaches. He's being evaluated too and has value this year in that he knows the players.

To me everything points to the biggest splash being after this season is over. I suppose some of them might happen at the trade deadline or just before the 2014 draft for picks. But I'd still look to see players identified as bad for the team to move one by one for assets/chips.

Having said all that, I think a knock your socks off deal with a known commodity would happen if it became available.

I think we should probably just look to enjoy the team as it is this season with tons of playing time for those who need to be evaluated most.

Lowry/FA vet/Stone
Demar/Ross/Q-Rich
Gay/Fields/Kleiza
Amir/Acy/Novak
JV/Gray/FA young prospect/Camby?

By the way, heard an interview from the new exec, Weltman. And he may have tipped something off inadvertently when he said concerning their plans something like, "We just need to come to the end of this road we're on as quickly as possible."

For any of these players who like Toronto, this would not be the year to stumble, or you're likely gone ASAP.

I'm tired of trying to guess. I thought at this point something more would have happened so I'm going to wait and see.

That's my point. Everything so far is short term and stand pat. Plenty of movement has already happened around the league. The only rumbles we've heard are about trying to get a pick this year and feelers for Demar. Smacks of a holding pattern.

I think it's fine if it happens this way though. Move the right guys, go forward with the right youthful core, add picks and spend properly to fill needs.

I think if we were trying to compete, more than a Bargnani deal would have happened. After collison's deal, we surely could have offered more for him than that. And Millsap, if Utah was letting him go, we probably could have done a s&t.

Eric Smith today said that he expects the starting 5 to be the same this season that ended the season. He says they'll add to the bench, short term deals and evaluate from there. Makes sense

Let's put it like this, the only thing we know for sure is that we're in no rush to improve the team. Haven't heard a single rumours to tie us with a free agent of any signinificance.
The Bargnani trade is a rebuilding move. We chose bad contracts and picks rather than serviceable players.

On the other hand, unloading all our big contracts will take time. May happen tomorrow or next Feb or next summer. But it will happen, at least IMO

I would love for that to happen. Sadly half of this board doesn't agree...

What else is new. It's rare to have consensus on any message board, this one is no exception.

Not sure what we coulda expected? Very little room for FA, makes sense to wait and see who doesn't get taken and see if there is a bargain to be had. Short of tanking and looking to see what we can get for gay and DD how could we be aggressive in trades. We went hard for picks in draft apparently, can't just expect something to happen. Good off-season so far for me.

other stuff could still happen......

Bargnani was gone one way or be other, addition by subtraction; no rebuild necessary I'm not too worried about those big contracts, they'll expire soon enough

Can't say I wouldn't enjoy watching this core healthy as it is. And some eastern teams have improved, but as a unit, it's hard to picture this team worse than last.

Gay is not visually impaired and is better conditioned, 3 rookies last year, none this year, Lowry's not fat, Demar can shoot? Defense first? No 4-19 start?

Read somewhere Andre Drummond will be training with the Dream this summer. If he is a fast learner, Raps lost

sure, but the type of trade we chose speaks fairly strongly for a rebuild
we also lost lucas and anderson and only added a no-name PG. There were a number of low-cost decent value benchers on the market in our price range and we were not linked with any. We still need a backup PG and backup PF and ideally a backup SF as well. Our bench turned from pretty bad to horrible and there's not a lot of quality left in the market.

If the plan is to truly evaluate this roster, this doesn't strike me as a fair chance.

I still think at least one of the big 3 will be traded in the next 10 days which will be the clear signal everybody is waiting.

I loved that vid. I'm still very ok to wait and see this group play together, especially with how close they're seemingly becoming.

To me, it really says a lot that MU didn't do the deal for David Lee. If we took that deal he would have been arguably our best player. Shows a bit where MU wants to take this team.
