What do we need?

Under the assumption that this is the core going forward.....

Lowry/General Greivis
DD
Ross
Amir/Patman
JV

With a chance to spend into the tax, what do we need to move up one more level from a second tier Atlanta hawks level to contender?

To me a vet backup big is obvious, but I think what we need most is a slasher that strikes more fear into defenses. More havoc. A different look from 3 and D Ross and Demar's not quite takeover skills.

Harden's not coming, Westbrook is not coming. I'm having a hard time seeing Ross or DD get quite there. I think if they need to go into the tax, that's the thing I think they need to get, somehow, some way.

Back-up SF can defends well, C that defends and rebounds and I would be happy to say bye to GV. Depends what we draft.

Limitless cap space or trading our junk and picks? If we could sign and trade or find cap space; either Ariza, AF Aminu, Peirce... or... Beasley. C is a wasteland...but Gortat then... Udoh? Then using a PF at Centre. PG must sign Lowry, sign Vasquez or replace with Livingston, Hinrich or Collison.

Draft best player regardless of position, but just not a tweener or undersized PF.

We likely have one more year before we can do anything like this since we have to wait for Fields, Hayes, Novac, Salmons to come off the books.

Salmons will come off the books this summer once his 1mil buyout is used

Sign Sefolosha, Sign Tony Allen, Trade our 1st, our 2016 NYK 1st and Amir to move up in the draft and sign Capela. Sign Payton with our 2nd rounder. Trade Fields, OKC 2nd and Juylan stone for a VET C

Lowry/Vasquez/Payton
DeRozan/Allen
Ross/Sefolosha
Capela/Patterson/Hansbrough
Valanciunas/Vet C

Is it just me or does everyone seem fine with Ross as our starting 3 going forward? Actually, I wouldn't mind it myself if he was a better rebounder, which is somewhat surprising given his elite athleticism. Then again, positioning is key too, and he's still learning/adjusting. Anyway, I'd prefer to have a starting 3 with more size that can rebound consistently as it's a huge weakness with this team. I think Ross could be solid as a scorer off the bench.

Draft good player ( hopefully), sign cheap backup C, maybe SF for a year. Keep the capspace and build the team for 2015 and beyond. There is no need to spend in this FA, imo we should keep the flexibility

DonMughal 03-21-2014 01:41 AM

Still waiting for that David West kind of PF. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE and am a HUGE fan of PP and Amir and I'm not saying they can't get better but if we can get a big name at the 4 spot by all means we should probably do it. Even Gasol would be a nice fit for a couple years. He's so damn skilled.

Kirby 03-21-2014 04:50 AM

A 2-way big that can create offence by himself... good luck finding one.

ZanTheMan 03-21-2014 04:59 AM

I would like a Keon Clark clone off the bench please.
Bring some excitement, shotblocking, running the break etc.

Shifty.py 03-21-2014 05:17 AM

Rim protector C. Real big man. Right now we only have one C in Val. And he is much in progress

(maybe bring back Ed Davis? :face4:)

hoodz 03-21-2014 06:58 AM

what about omer asik? if he still wants out of houston.

EDIT:

i wouldent mind that at all. hes buried on that bench and i think hes still a solid PF

davis / p pat
jv / amir

amir seriously needs to put on more muscle mass tho

This team is in 5th place in points allowed with some pretty young rotation players. Considering their start, they'd have to be playing at near elite level as a unit to do that. Salmons is going and that's an issue because he knows what he's doing on D. I just think they need to bring up offensive production with someone who can buy in defensively.....without adding a black hole to the team. It's been needed in some matchups and would balance the team more. That's why I think a slasher is warranted at some point.

Hope JV and Ross continue to grow over the next 2 years, but 1 or 2 year contracts to a capable vet big and a capable vet wing would be a good idea.

Definitely a ton more financial wiggle room next year, but plenty of expirings coming up next year.

Metallikid 03-21-2014 09:05 AM

The thing that would best benefit our team would be a reliable offensive big. Perhaps not all-star calibre, but close at least. For instance an Al Jeff, Josh Smith, or in terms of practical targets, our prodigal son, CB.

Al Jeff is locked up, CB ain't coming back and Josh Smith is a cancerous black hole.

Admiral 03-21-2014 09:47 AM

CB is only a good improvement with guys like Lebron and Wade. On this team he will either become a guy that becomes the "franchise" player and demands the ball too much. We've already seen that he cannot carry that burden and be on a team that is competing for the championship. He's also become somewhat of a stretch 4 which we already have Patman. He would only be an upgrade but a duplicate. I think Amir at starting PF would actually be more beneficial.

Josh Smith just sucks. His game is still largely based off of athleticism which I don't like considering he isn't getting any younger. His black hole abilities are similar to Rudy Gay's except his shooting and playmaking is worse.

Northern Neighbour 03-21-2014 10:00 AM

I would an upgrade at PF is the #1 priority. I really like Amir, but he should be a 6th man. The team needs a better rebounder at the position and someone who can generate some offence. Kevin Love would be excellent IMO, but the price likely would be too high. Grabbing one of Cleveland's young big men should be explored. If Greg Monroe is available in the off-season, he would be another one to target.

A backup centre is needed. Not sure who is available, though.

That's a deep team with good defense, I like

FYI we have 41 million committed next season meaning we will have roughly 30 million to spend before the tax (although a lot of holes will need to be filled with guys like amir becoming an RFA....still 30 million is a lot of cash

cloudnine 03-21-2014 12:01 PM

...you do know the salary cap is just under $60m, right?

If we pick up Amir's option and sign Lowry to a ~$10m/yr deal, that basically takes up the rest of our space. Barring a few swapped parts, this is the lineup going forward.

We will have 5-6 new players next season imo.
