What to do with Bayless in the coming months?

Just slightly off the trade radar has been the Raptors back-up point guard Jerryd Bayless. Toronto didn’t pick up the final option year on his rookie contract and can make him a restricted free agent this summer in keeping with Colangelo’s plan for salary cap flexibility, plus Bayless has not made a secret of his desire to be a starting point guard at some point in his career. Coach Casey however handed the starting job back to the veteran Jose Calderon and assigned Bayless the back-up role. This marks the third time in his short NBA career that Bayless has been stuck behind a veteran point guard who is playing well.

“Sooner or later I do want to do that and hopefully some day that happens,” said Bayless. “But right now I am here and this is the role I have been given so I am going to do whatever to help this team.”

In an effort to get Bayless more minutes, Casey has started the young combo guard at the two several times, but this isn’t the role Bayless wants. When asked about it, Bayless was emphatic.

“I am playing the backup point and I’d rather play backup point and continue to do what I am,” said Bayless.

Bayless has been a solid player for the Raptors, both off the bench backing up Calderon and providing scoring from the off guard position and he isn’t causing any waves, but it seems unlikely the Raptors will be his first choice as a free agent and if the team wants an asset in return, the trade deadline may provide their best opportunity.

Probably the biggest reason the Raptors do not anticipate any major moves at the trade deadline is the wish list of attributes for any future additions. The Raptors plan on being a lot better next season.

Uhh, why?

Do you seriously not think the Raptors don't plan on being a lot better next season?

BC/Casey's final year under contract, capspace + Valanciunas + potential trade (s)....

To think BC and the organization won't plan on being much better is being naive. I mean, the article isn't saying they're certain to be a lot better. Just that it's the plan......shocker!

it says the raptors are PLANING on being a lot better next season. every team is trying to improve. i don't know a team that doesn't plan to get better. it doesn't say the raptors WILL be a lot better...

I was impressed with Bayless STARTING last season. He averaged 18.1 ppg, 6.7 apg, 1.0 spg, 3.6 rpg, in 35.5 mpg. .467 FG%, .333 3PT %, .810 FT%, 2.9 TOs/game. All in 14 games as a starter. I think if he isn't starting he should be dealt. He is better starting than coming off the bench. He should be dealt if he isn't starting + BC wants to preserve capspace.

I'm just glad he's playing, I know he's missed a grip of games for you guys. Keep him, he's better then a lotta players out there right now.

Thats the conundrum.
Casey wants to win and prefers more experienced and under control guy starting.
But Bayless has repeatedly shown in the past he plays better when he starts at PG
And Calderon has shown repeatedly his production doesn't fall (even improves) off the bench

I'd love to just start him to see him reproduce those #'s from last year, but if a guy can't prove himself against another team's bench, you can't just start him.

I say keep him on the bench and hopefully by the end of the season he can earn that starting position.

We're better off with him signing with another team. There are guys in this draft who I am more interested in like Trey Burke.

You hit the nail on the coffin right there. JB starting and Jose coming off the bench the raps have 2 +s at a key position. However right now the raps have 1 plus and a 0 or negative at a key position. I've been expecting JB to start when Jose inevitably gets injured at some point in the season but it hasn't happened yet, maybe it won't...

The recipe for success:

1. Wave Carter.
2. Manufacture a Calderon injury (that is, if he is not moved past the deadline).
3. Hand Bayless the reigns for 40 minutes/game.

And the tank is back in business. :)

4. Watch Bayless post 25 and 8 every game until end of season
5. Hand him 5 year 50M contract in offseason
6. ???

I like to think that Bayless will have a breakout year next year instead of this because of reason #5.

Maybe there's a chance that Colangelo knows this and limits Bayless's playtime and confuses his consistency by making him switch positions every 5games.

so instead it's this.
4. Tell him he's a SG one game, then PG next, but then tell him he should be a pass first pg.

5. extend for dirt cheap in off season.

6. Next Year, tell him to play his game and score like mad.

7. Championship Time. *sarcasm with a bit of delusional hope.
