Someone over at realgm did a little research, and here should be some assurance for the anti-Fields people out there.
Quote:
I always liked fields as a basketball player, I always views him as a player who can play both the 2/3 but is better as a 3. He's a tough nosed player, who does it all, and actually has some skill to him. This past season was a tough one for him, but whenever I watched the Knicks play I always though him and Carmelo was just an awful match with each other. Landry Fields is a player who loves to make cuts, and catch and finish. Carmelo loves to hold the ball and score, and I always viewed them as an awful match with each other. I did a little research and I wasnt wrong. During the 7 game winning streak where Carmelo was out, Fields averaged these numbers as the starting small forward.

( 7 games) 11.6 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 3.4 APG on 47.7 percent shooting from the field.

Then I thought hmmm maybe it was a fluke. Looking back to Fields rookie year, heres how his stats where BEFORE Carmelo came to town.

(54 games) 10.1 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 2.0 APG on 51.9 percent shooting

His stats after Carmelo Anthony came to town

(25 games) 8.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.8, APG on 45 percent shooting

We all heard the theory that Carmelo makes those around him worst, and I never believed it, and I still dont, but I do believe a player like Fields whose game is based around cutting to the basket, and ball movement is not a good fit with a player like Carmelo. I do honestly believe that Fields will regain form here in Toronto. I still think we overpayed for his services, but that doesn't mean in my eyes that he wont be able to play up to it. If we get a player who can average 12/6.5/3.5 on decent shooting from the 3 spot will his contract REALLY look that bad? Fields can be that glue guy for our team, and I'm excited to see what he can do in OUR system.
I'm sure Fields will look great in a Raptors uniform like in his rookie season.

If Landry is the best the Raps can do at SF then I'm a bit underwhelmed. He'll probably make the Raps spacing and rebounding better at least. Maybe he'll become a defensive pit-bull too.

BC intended to sign him with or without Nash. its not like Nash was going to be attracted to Toronto with a Fields signing.

Well, it really did happen.

I am not particularly happy. Not to the level of Thrills' post unhappiness, but...

Did BC really have to spend not insignificant amount of cap on another not-really-starting-level player? I honestly fail to see what Fields would be bringing to the SF position that James Johnnson hasn't brought last season, at a much cheaper salary and at a much better size and defensive ability. And if BC has just spent over 6 mil for another player at a position where we already have DD and Ross, that's just insane.

In short - I am puzzled. Either Kleiza or DeMar should go out of town in a trade or this signing makes very little sense outside of "oops, we've made this offer to secure Nash and are now stuck making implausible excuses".

This is spot on. Unfortunately it appears as though BC is trying to pass Fields signing as "addressing a SF issue", so he's not obligated to make further moves.

I disagree. The official signing of Fields means BC can now be more aggressive in the trade market. I believe someone mentioned that he was going to wait until Landry is officially part of the team before pursuing anymore trades.

Assets, flexibility - yes, but to what end? That's what I meant - unless there are more trades involving our wings, this doesn't make much sense.

Fields is a natural SF. He isn't an impact player but he's a great player to have.

Is that why he's played SG for his entire career? Interesting.

I believe he played sf in college or something.
His skillset is of a small forwards, and he's always been bumped to sg due to Gallo, Wilson Chandler, and Melo. When Melo was out, Fields played sf with Lin and Shump.

Oops.
