Default Weems tearing it up in europe

Sonny Weems, Zalgiris
17.5 ppg | 5.9 rpg | 1.3 spg

With a reputation as a raw athlete and only limited NBA success to draw on, I thought Sonny’s intenational maturation would be miles behind teammate Ty Lawson’s. Well, Lawson struggled to be a distributor, turned some of his own fans into enemies thanks to a social media mishap, and left Kaunas with a bad taste in its mouth and an even worse record when he returned to the Denver Nuggets. Meanwhile, Sonny’s point total dipped below 14 only once in ten weeks as he led the team in both boards and steals, helping Zalgiris secure a Top 16 berth even when everyone had left them for dead.

Led the team with boards and steals? Do they have any centres or is Weems the tallest on the team? lol

does Ty Lawson sucking balls on the bottom team in Euroleague tell us that he's now a bad player, or that the NBA is terrible?

he did not lead the team in boards. he was second.
But he also played by far the most minutes.
The bigs on the team aren't impressive, but they play ~ 22 minutes each.
The best rebounding starter on the team gets 10 boards per 36 minutes to Weems 7 boards per 36.

A center? 7rpg for a SF is impressive.

Sonny was never a really bad player. He's an end of the rotation/back up SF in the league, so I'm not sure why some of us are surprised.

His biggest faults were/are his immaturity on the court and off (how many times would he jump up on the side boards, it would make us look bush league) and he never really played within his game. For his athletic ability, he should've been getting easy looks as the FT line, but he never really attacks. He settles a lot and takes some bad shots in the offence.

I chalk it up to a lack of NBA maturity.

the 10 rebounds per 36 guy? no, he's a 3/4, a 6'8 Kleiza type. Their center is crappy due to bad legs.

btw, it's 7 per 36 minutes, not rpg.

it's still very good, but to put it in perspective, Sonny is 5th in rebounding rate among Euroleague's small forward starters. So, solid. But he's not dominant or anything.
And again, keep in mind, the team is small. The center is old and not very mobile. It's a significantly below average team.

He's top 10 in minutes in Euroleague. He's also top 10 in scoring. He's not top 10 in any other category. His scoring efficiency is very average by Euroleague standards (he's outside top 50). And his team is crap.
So, top 10 Euroleague player? I don't think so.

That said, it's not his fault that Ty Lawson was a bust and their owner is mentally certifiable, and they change 3 coaches a year.
If this was a better situation where Sonny was asked to be a role player in a more stable system... I think he'd be more effective player, not just a stat stuffer.

Top 5 seems pretty dominant to me? Either way, good for him.

well, i don't think you have a good grasp on the size of Euroleague, but it's up to you what you consider "dominant". to me, LeBron is dominant, Mike Beasley is not. but it's just a word, it can be used in many ways i guess
