Yes, stats are awesome, but he's also coming back from an injury in which he missed an entire season.

Yes, and before the back injury he wasn't doing anymuch to show improvement. He's stayed at virtually the same level his entire career though I will agree his numbers were slightly increasing before the injury, not that big of a difference though.

I don't really care about his numbers, I've watched him play and he's got a great game. He's also still only 22 almost 23 years old. Charlie is 25...

And Charlie hasn't really done anything to distinguish himself since being traded from Toronto, except maybe being labelled lazy and bouncing in and out of his former coach's dog house.

Numbers or not, Martel has not lived up to the hype. Charlie is now shooting .500 and putting up great numbers in 30mins. Martel has never excelled and been the same consistantly, Charlie has more upside. However, with Outlaw out now will give us a great indication of where Martel is at, he'll get the minutes.

Listen, I like Charlie, but it's 10 games into season.

Anyway, I don't think you're giving Martell enough credit if you want to lump him in with a bunch of shitty picks we could've made.

You could've said Fran Vazquez, Yarolsav Korolev or Sean May.

I wouldn't say "shitty" just looking at different perspectives. Some picks could hav ejust worked out less than beneficial than they did while others worked out perfectly.

Austin Croshere had a nice few years in Indiana. I think Webster is solid but I don't think he has the potential that Charlie V has. However I do agree it's early,we'll give them both this season and see where they are at the end of the season.

Don`t even joke about that.

Grunwald said had he had the number 1 pick, he would`ve taken Kandi.

1997- Instead of T-Mac, Auston Croshere

1998- Instead of Antwan Jamison, Tyronn Lue

1999- Instead of Johnathan Bender...ahh well it was a bad pick as is.

2000- Instead of Mo Pete...Mateen Cleeves

2001- Michael Bradley sucked he stays.

2002- Kareem Rush was terrible enough

2003- Instead of Bosh, Michael Sweetney

2004- No comment

2005- Instead of Charlie V...Martell Webster

2006-Instead of Bargs....POB

2007- No pick

2008-Trade that didn't work out that much.
Great post, Julius. When you look at the other end of the spectrum, it really does hammer home the fact that, overall, the Raptors have been better than average when it comes to using lottery picks. I mean, really, the only reason the Raps never made the eastern conference finals 2 or 3 years in a row was because they couldn't re-sign Tracy McGrady. If you change that one development, Raptor fans would probably be talking about how lucky they were to have such solid management in the first 5 years. Other teams' fans can whine about who their GMs didn't draft, but the Raps GMs did make smart moves early on. Management had little to no control over whether or not McGrady stayed.

Compare the assests the Raps had after using their first 5 lottery picks with those of other expansion franchises, and the Raps win no contest, in my opinion.

After 5 drafts:

Raps in 1999
Alvin Williams (via trade for Stoudamire)
Oakley (via trade for Camby)
McGrady
Carter
Antonio Davis (via trade for Bender)

That's pretty fucking solid. If that core had stayed together, they would have had a chance at making the NBA finals in 2001, 2002, or 2003.

Now, look at what the Grizzlies and the Bobcats did with their first 5 picks.

Bobcats in 2008
Okafur
Felton
Morrison
Jason Richardson (via trade for Brandan Wright)
Augustin

Grizzlies in 1999
Bryant Reeves (too fat to play at this point)
Abdur-Rahim
Felipe Lopez (via trade for Antonio Daniels)
Mike Bibby
Michal Dickerson (*via trade for Steve Francis)
Othella Harrington*
A future 1st rd pick*
A future 2nd rd pick*

Let me put it this way - the teams that consistently draft well do it with much lower picks than the Raps were getting over the years.

Believe me, though - pretty much any team outside of San Antonio, Utah, Dallas and, maybe, Lakers has its blunders.
