Raptors We have no real vets on this team

So hey I was looking at our current roster and noticed Amir is our most experienced player with 8 years in the league, and he's still considered a youngster, not your typical grizzled vet. Usually an NBA roster contains a couple or so vets with 10 to 12 years in the big league. A calming influence in the lockerroom and on the court, so to speak.

Won't we miss that kind of experience when we try to grab a hold of the eight spot, or are veterans overrated anyway? Could we use a Darrick Martin type of player or are we going with AJ as our experienced player and Novak as our oldest player (30yrs old, 7 year - seldom used - journeyman).

As it stands we have 2 rookies on our team and 4 players with 1 year of experience. We're going to be a very young team no doubt.

Do we have enough experience? Should we get more? Should we ask Kevin Willis to come out of retirement?

Your thoughts please.

you have to be old to be a vet?
Amir has had plenty of years in the league. I consider him a vet.

my thoughts, it won't matter since all you want is the 8th seed.

The team isn't full of rookies. Also, Magloire still works for/with the team. Not an issue.

The Lakers had a bunch of vets with a ton of playoff experience, and Toronto should have swept them (half of Rudy's misses from long range came in that one OT loss, I swear).

Well there's too young, and there's too old.

My experience (looking at NBA rosters for 15 years) is that a "healthy" roster always contains 2 or 3 vets with 10+ years in the league. Teams with no such players don't exist or are bottomfeeders who have just embraced some kind of youth movement. Are we that kind of team? Or am I exaggerating??

Is Amir really a veteran, and in what regard? He has been in the league for a while but barely played in his first years and is still young. He has barely started and has never been to the playoffs. (pardon, he's been there but didn't put up noteworthy numbers) He was a self proclaimed "young gun/one" only a couple of seasons ago.

Magloire is a useful addition no doubt but he'll never really be "out there" with the team.

yeah - it would be nice to see them make an acquisition similar to Indy getting West. I think they just need to sort out the overall direction of this team over the next couple of years before something like that happens.

It's also a good reason for wanting to see this fairly young, but not entirely young team get some playoff experience under their belts.

Last year OKC had only one player with 10+ years experience - and he only played 24 games. Prior to picking him up, they had none, and were 44-15 in that time. Not exactly a bottom feeder.

It does seem to be something that is becoming less valuable in the NBA. I think maybe the speed of the game makes it less of an imperative. It certainly was the factor that screwed the Lakers over.

Thanks DanH, didn't know that!
I guess it's more common than I thought.

Jesus he has 7 or 8 years under his belt. It doesn't matter if you sat on the bench you still get experience from being around the team.

Yeah I don't think a fulltime starter and a career benchwarmer contain the same "amount" of experience after 8 years... If you haven't actually played in crunch time, in close games, in overtimes, in a playoff clincher, in a playoff game, in a finals game, how are you going to tell your younger teammates what it feels like and how they should behave...?

So you're telling me someone who spent 8 years on the bench isn't considered a veteran?

I think he's clearly saying he thinks more experience would help this team, for the reasons he stated. Why are you getting confrontational and suggesting anyone is trying to tell you something?

Derozan: 5th season
Gay: 8th season
Amir: 9th season
Gray: 7th season
Novak: 8th season
Lowry: 8th season
Augustine: 6th season
Daye: 5th season

No veterans?

We're not old, but we have several young vets. Some of them have been in winning situations prior to coming here too.

Clearly? That's not what the title says...
Confrontational? Was that really such a bad way to respond?

It's not such a bad way to respond if you want to get caught up in the meaning of a word just to prove someone is wrong when they've gone out of their way to explain and clarify what they mean in a very reasonable manner.

I think we could use a little more experience, but my countless hours spent listening to Steve Kerr and Clark Kellogg while playing 2k13 have told me that playoff experience for the players isnt such a big deal, it's more important that the coaching staff has such experience.
