Question Are We Considered Championship Contenders Yet?

MVP's post in another thread where he mentioned that he didn't think we could be considered contenders yet, got me thinking. If we're not considered contenders now, who or what type of player(s) do we have to add to take us to that next level? Or what other moves or things do we need to do to be taken more serious in the NBA?

Discuss.

I definately dont think we are contenders, we need a real slasher that can create his own shot, and a legit big scoring threat off the bench (i know, i know you all say thats Bargs, lets see it 1st, and i think Kap could be that guy if we got a guard so good we know him and moon wont start).

Interesting Snooch ... so in other words from a roster point of view we good to go, but it might boil down the how this team is ran and utilized?

Yes.

Have (2) 20 and 10 guys down low. 1 considered an above average defender. The other is no slouch.

Have best 3 point shooter in the league.

Have arguably one of the best point guards in the game.

Have Parker who is one of the best shooters in the game, good guys, solid defender, does alot of things well.

Have argueable one of the highest potential big men in the game who could singlehadedly change the way the game is played. At worst he is a shooting big man with good handles who would compliment both Bosh and JO

Have a good roll player in Moon who can play some defense and shoots alright, plays with lots of hustle and energy.

Solomon, Adams and Humps are extra bodies who all hustle and all bring something whether it be defense/rebounding

We are too weak at swing positions to be consider championship contender. Anyway, I don't mind Raptors flying under radar this year and surprise anyone . If Miami could won a championship a while ago then anybody can do it

We are not considered contenders yet. We are much closer too being dark horses, but we are only a quality slashing swingman away from being contenders, and we are very lucky that that is all, considering that swingmen (small forwards and shooting guards) are by far the easiest positions to find talent in, as almost any team, college or pro, has good swingmen, excluding us and a few others.

No, but then again, New Orleans wasn't considered near contenders at the start of last year either. There's always oppurtunity for a surprise. I think if we had Iguodala or Deng or Roy as a wing scorer we'd be there... oh wait.

A lot depends on Bargnani's development. Either he helps us get to the next level himself himself, or he has a good year and raises his value so we can trade him next summer for a Jason Richardson-level player who can put us over the top.

No we aren't contenders yet. We need another starting wing that can get to the rim and create his own shot and another veteran leader off the bench.

No.
To win a championchip you gotta win games in the playoffs (obviously). the last two years we've sucked ass and the addition of O'neil is not a surefire thing yet. When it seen that he brings something we lacked the past couple of years and once we start winning against good teams throughout the season, then we can proclaim that we are contenders. People get caught up in calling teams contenders just because they made a move or two and acquired new players... its bullshit. To me, you only become a contender when you've won over (or kept it close) against the heavyweights in the league.

very rarely a team who didn't win a playoff round for 5 years, gets to win the championship right away. Until we show we can play, nobody will consider us a real contender. Not even Orlando gets that status - you need to make it to the conference finals first, before you'll get that kind of respect (and deservedly so).

I have to agree with Ugo and Snootch. Both the coaching and SG situations MUST be addressed before they can become a legitimate contender. I'd give the coaching change priority though. The swingman situation wouldn't be as big of a problem if a/any defensive system could be implemented.

Well, I don't know if I would call the Raptors contenders yet, but I think they have an outside chance. The thing that wins championships is the ability to play D. The ability to shut down the other team's top players. Celtics did it to the Lakers. The Raptors D last season was better than it was made out to be. They were decent enough to hold teams in check, but their problem was not having a killer instinct on offense. If you are going to shut teams down on D, if that is going to be your focus, then you better damn well finish on the other end.

A wing player. A guy who plays solid D, who slashes and who has the ability to be at least considered a borderline all-star. If not that then Bargnani needs to finally step up.

Being called championship contenders is pretty big. I don't think we're near that yet. Let's just get top 4 in the conference before thinking about calling us champs. Don't get me wrong I think our team this year will be pretty good. But it's too soon to be calling us championship contenders.

if Bargnani steps up it wont make much of a difference, we'll just have a stronger bench
if you want to be a true contender, picking up somone like mcgrady/pierce/anthony would make a lot of sense... but the chance
of that happening is slim to none.
