We are better this year after 36 games !

Expectations were very high heading into this year. When you look at how we compare to last year our record this year is better. After 36 games last year we were 16 wins and 20 losses, so far after 36 this year we are 19 wins and 17 losses. Also note we are so much better on the road this year. What has made us better in a stronger east division so far ?

Yup, so really we don't need to blow up this team like some are asking for. If BC can find us come insurance at the PG spot and possibly a tough rebounding big man, we should be sitting pretty for a run in the 2nd half of the season. Will we catch Boston for the division title? Likely not unless something earth shattering happens in Beantown, but we can make a run for the 4th spot and still get home court advantage. :D

Belsius 01-12-2008 11:03 AM

We really need to get the 4th spot, we are better than washington, and I can even see us getting the 3rd, it will be difficult though. I was checking our calendar for the rest of the season, and we dont really have any more difficult consecutive games. And april is really easy so we will arrive to the playoffs with a lot of energy.
Lets not be too positive cause we know To hasnt been consistant, we might lose the three next.

Krazy Ivan 01-12-2008 11:26 AM

Although Raps have move wins this year they also had easier schedule this year...

moremilk 01-12-2008 11:54 AM

I'm more afraid of cleveland getting that 4th spot ... The way it looks now, the top 4 at the end of the season will be: boston, detroit, cleveland, whasington. Which means we really must fight with orlando to get the 5th. We can beat whasington on the road, it's tought, but we can do it. We will have 0 chances against det/bos/cle though ...

Benzo 01-12-2008 11:56 AM

Washington?? really?..I havnt even check ed what they are doing this year?

* goes to NBA.com*

Belsius 01-12-2008 12:15 PM

washington better than orlando? even cleveland is better IMO

Kuzzy 01-12-2008 12:34 PM

Check Raptors schedule after ALL-STAR break :| :|
we might go on like a 15 game win streak.
i say were going to finish 3rd and face a team like new jersey/ washington
winnable.

check out this prediction:
1 bos
2 det
3 tor
4 orl
5 clev
6 wash
7 new jersey
8 ? = no matter what boston will rip you apart.

I think we'll finish 3rd, or struggle to get the last seed, depending on how things pan out at the pg spot, and with Bargnani.

The defense has irrefutably improved this year, but with TJ gone right now, and Bargnani seemingly finding it hard to commit to playing at the 5, maybe they scrap their defensive gains thus far, grab a pg who can add to the offense, and win through the softer part of the schedule by scoring alone, and playing good enough on defense, similar to last season. I can't see that happening, but it might be necessary.

I think the biggest thing to look out for is how effective TJ is when he returns, on both ends of the court. If he can't return to the kind of form he displayed before being hit, then that will probably throw the whole balance off yet again, and keep them at around .500. But if he does fully recover his form, then he'll act as quite a leader in terms of bringing the right kind of intensity every game and ignite the team to a pretty strong record. I like how guys like Parker and Calderon have picked up the reigns of leadership a little more lately. Ultimately, the challenges of the past month, could really help this team peak at the right time.

And really - December could have been much worse. It looked like it was going to go better than expected before the hit on TJ, but then at that point it was up in the air. And with the resultant difficulty of hitting shots, they did well to stay in enough games to survive a difficult month. Now let's see if they can get on something of a roll.

Kuzzy 01-12-2008 07:25 PM

We'll get a nice seed.
But if Bargnani doesnt atleast get 5 boards a game with 14-16 points
ATLEAST.
u cud see a 2nd round matchup; max.

right, that's why I put them on 3rd. Boston, Detroit and Cleveland are a class apart - but after that it's a wash. We'll probably have more wins than Orlando (who will not make the playoffs imo) and Wizards, but Wizards will get the #4 spot as a division winner. And btw, Wizards are beating the Celtics on a back-to-back ... the only thing that could stop them is Arenas returning sooner, which doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Belsius 01-12-2008 11:27 PM

Orlando not making the playoffs? that would be a huge surprise IMO.

Dr. J. Naismith 01-12-2008 11:58 PM

WOW, bold statement milk. I know they're going through a slump right now, but there no worse than us. The Magic will pull it together again and they'll make the playoffs. There's no way they miss it altogether.

moremilk 01-13-2008 11:58 AM

well - I don't like them, so I might be biased ... :) Still, do you think it's really impossible? Last season they've started on fire, and barely made it in the end. They have NOTHING at 1 and 2, Hedu is starting to get back to earth and Lewis is not playing all that great. All it takes is a injury and they'll be out of the picture.

Yeah, I was about to say that if a significant injury happens then yes they might be playing with fire milk, but if not then I think they'll make the changes that are required for them to get back on track and be one of the stronger teams in the East. Book it! :D

Acie 01-13-2008 12:12 PM

They need a point guard. Nelson reminds me of a slightly less talented Marbury.

LX 01-13-2008 05:07 PM

And they need a Howard with some heart, some desire, some cahones, to match his biceps and hype. Their freefall is all too predictable. And yes they are worse than us, because they have no team game to fall back on. Mostly due to what Acie said.

Sick, Wicked and Nasty! 01-14-2008 08:29 AM

It's nice to see a thread about the team showing some optimism and appreciation for our record so far... although not so surprising it's after a 3 game winning streak :)

I see us as a mid-pack playoff team this year. I really hope TJ comes back after the break..any serious damage we may do is dependent apon him. I think we can sustain AB's crappiness with Rasho, Hump and Moon playing pretty well but not having FOrd will make us a likely first round exit again....although making it to the playoffs without him would be a significant accomplishment.

Belsius 01-14-2008 08:48 AM

wow man you really like Ford. an accomplishment to make the playoffs without ford? you dont have any faith in calde do you?

We're 20-17...after a fairly forgiving schedule so far... we lost to Seattle huge! The east is better this year and some teams like NJ and Cleveland are just starting to hit their stride. My props to Calderon have never ceased, but he's not the best pg on the team for this team imo and having him and no one behind him has proven to make things difficult. Our record says it all. Our offencive numbers(which are trully offensive) reflect what TJ means to this team and we are much better with both in th elineup...shouldn't shock anyone with that.
