Vittorio De Zen's Fast Break: A Closer Look at the Raptors Defence

Quote:
As we all know, and as I have mentioned on this blog in the past, the 2009/2010 Toronto Raptors are a much different beast than last year. Gone are Anthony Parker and Jason Kapono, in are willing defenders Reggie Evans, Rasho Nesterovic and Jarret Jack, as well as Jose Calderonís two functioning hamstrings. Jay Triano now has a training camp to implement the type of defense that he wants to see played. Unfortunately, gone is the able defender Jamario Moon, who, while doing things that infuriated many a Raptors fan, was actually one of the teamís best defenders.

He said 'one of the team's best defenders' which doesn't necessarily have to mean good..on this team anyways. Who on last year's team was better? Oneal was, Marion was(counts as one guy), Graham was, Parker was...possibly Bargnani. Who else?

Well I guess if you are gonna break it down like that, he is a okay defender but overall he isn't that good or something that we should miss

Jamario Moon got blown by every single time. He was terrible.

Gabe91 I agree with everything you said except this part...

I'm not saying he was a world beater on D but even the most brief stats lookup on 82games.com shows him to be one of the better defenders on the (admittedly poor) team last year. Keep in mind we're not saying he's one of the best Boston Celtics or Cavaliers...we're saying one of the better defenders on the Raptors last year. Heck, Mop Girl was arguably right behind him on the list, but not many were above.

Moon had and still has, the tools to be a good individual defender.
As far as team "D" goes, he was pretty much just a tool.

Overall a pretty good article but i was surprised that he didn't mention our best defender Wright, when he mentioned defensively abled Raps. He will be the biggest impact wing defender and helps us get into the top 8-10 defensive teams. Amir Johnson is also a pretty formidable defender.

If you're talking athletic tools, yes.

He wasn't exactly there "up there" though. Which also showed on offense.

Christ I'm glad he's gone...

When I think Moon, I think of a guy that is going to fall for the pump fake every time. If guys like Wright and Jack and even Belinelli can improve upon that, then it's golden.

Yep, not the brightest crayon in the box.

I have a feeling we won't be pining for Moon's brand of D this year. His best asset was disrupting passing lanes and Derozan should be just as effective there. Hell, the length of the Raptors starting frontcourt alone should make it more difficult for the opposition to move the ball. Like a guilty politician - deny, deny, deny.

Excellent points. I too think the length of our front court will cause other offences fits. There ain't gonna be a whole lotta free space out there.
I hope Derozan turns out to be better defensively than what i saw in summer league. He seemed to stay out of the traffic zones far too much for my liking. He needs to get a whole lot more active. It's the reason i can't see him being in our starting unit unless he improves a whole lot.

I like this year's Raptors defense - best since Garbo played the 3.
We should expecting much better defense than we've been seeing in the last 2 years!

Moon looked like he was going to be a good player when he arrived but his game took a long slow steady decline at both ends of the floor - and it kept sliding after the trade to Miami. Thus now he's in Cleveland
