Default Vince Carter on his time in Toronto

I tuned in a few minutes ago on The Score and they had the Carter media scrum at ACC on. He basically spoke about his time in Toronto. He had nothing bad to say. It went on for a long time (~10, 15 mins) and I didn't even see it from the start. It was hard not to think as if the media and/or Carter were trying to get him back to play for us. I know some of you guys have mentioned about wanting that to happen.

He will never come back, regardless if it was good for this team and him or not.

He loves Toronto. This is where he blew up (literally and figuratively) - he has a lot of friends here and business ventures here. Love him or hate him, he put Toronto basketball on the map.

he THOUGHT he put the Raptors on the basketball map... canada was a basketball nation before he brought his terrible attitude here i can assure you of that, ask 1976 olympian Jay Triano how much respect canada had internationally long before HE showed his sorry ass here.

You guys need to kill the hate. I'm not a fan of how he left either, but you can't dispute the fact that he WAS the franchise for the time he was here. He put asses in the seats and made a lot more kids want to play ball.

Thanks for being a smart-ass. You knew EXACTLY what I was trying to convey.

And for all those who don't believe the hype that he put Toronto on the basketball map, I'm sure everyone (if not most) had Raptors jerseys with "Carter" on the back - or had a poster of him.

Saying Carter had nothing to do with exposing the Raptors in Canada and in the States, and as well as exposing basketball in general in Canada is ignorant.

I'm sure if Carter wasn't around, Toronto might have suffered the same fate as Vancouver and their franchise.

And Raptors were televised in the beginning - that's because the franchise was in it's infancy and it was the novelty thing - but after a while, that novelty wears off. Carter made people stand up and take notice of the Raptors, made people basketball fans - to this day are Raptors fans because of him.

Carter was entertaining. I loved watching him play and I would say that he was one of the reasons I started watching the Raps. But the thing he did to leave pissed me off

it's not a matter of hate, he still has many franchise records that might not be broken and did a lot of good things in his time in toronto. i am just disagreeing with statements that put HIM at the center of the basketball in canada thoughts. I grew up watching guys that inspired me like jay and eli pasquali and martin riley who i know on a personal level and vince did little to inspire basketball in winnipeg during his time in canada, most of the guys i knew hated him as a selfish player and his "wanting out" or trade other stars mentality did way more harm than good. he put up numbers, but his teams were by and large terrible. he had 3 good seasons and the rest were awful.

199798 16 66 .195
199899 23 27 .460
19992000 45 37 .549 Lost First Round New York 3, Toronto 0
200001 47 35 .573 Won First Round
Lost Conference Semifinals Toronto 3, New York 2
Philadelphia 4, Toronto 3
200102 42 40 .512 Lost First Round Detroit 3, Toronto 2
200203 24 58 .293
200304 33 49 .402

since he left, the Raptors have had two winning seasons but none as bad as that 24 win season that vince cried his way through. he was a very good player, but he left a lot of bitter people in his wake. Until the Raptors win more than 47 without him, i suspect he will be the object of scorn in the toronto area. as for me, he will remain a gifted athlete with plenty of untapped talent who settled for less than all he had over the span of his career. sure he has good numbers, but imagine his numbers had he been able to work with some of the talent he was surrounded with both here and in New Jersey. sorry, but to say he is the reason that cbc broadcasted the game yesterday does a huge disservice to the huge and growing basketball community in this country from coast to coast. sigh, don't hate me please!!

what i said was, there was basketball in canada played at very high levels long before Carter showed up or toronto and vancouver would not have been given franchise.

You might not have grown up watching him, but a lot of kids did. I didn't grow up watching Jay Triano or any of those dudes. I grew up watching Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas, those guys - and for a franchise like Toronto - their first true superstar was Vince (you can talk about Damon Stoudamire, but he wasn't on the same level) - and for once, puckheads across the country started taking notice and fell in love with basketball.

I don't know what your point is, takman. You hate him, sure, that's cool - but he made a lot of people in Canada basketball fans and interested in the sport - and that, you cant dispute.

I started watching because of "Mighty Mouse". He's still probably the most exciting Raptor ever for me just behind Vince.

No, the Raptors have had one winning season since he left, not two. You lied.

And is a 24-win season really worse than a 27-win season? What you fail to mention is that the Raptors weren't all THAT bad with Vince in that 24-win season (18-24). The only reason they won only 24 games is because he had probably the worst supporting cast in NBA history. The proof is in the record they had without him (6-33). Thus with a huge sample size of both games played, and games missed (he played approximately half the season, and missed approximately half the season), the Raptors were + 0.275 with Vince in the lineup. No other player in Raptors history has had anywhere near that kind of effect on the team's winning percentage. In 2006-07 for example, the Raptors were 6-7 without Bosh, and 41-28 with Bosh. That is a difference of only + 0.132, less than half the difference Vince had in 02-03. And the Raptors record in 05-06 was far worse than it was in the games Vince played in 02-03.

You also lied when you said Vince "cried his way through the season". If he did "cry", give a link to video evidence. Or at least cite particular incidences when he "cried".

And on Vince, is anyone surprised that he has refused to say anything negative about Toronto/the Raptors? In four years I haven't heard him say one negative thing about the city, the team, or even the fans or media. This despite the constant hate. Juvenile fans not only boo him (which I have no problem with), but chant "VC sucks", make stupid signs about his mother's parking space and whatnot, and even dress up stand-up paper Vince's in dresses. And the media refuses to say anything nice about him, doing things like "top 10 reasons to hate Vince Carter", still referring to him as "Wince", making fun of him every time he has a minor injury (which is very rare nowadays), and would you hear them criticize Bosh when he misses his annual 15 games to "injury"? No.

98% of NBA players would be saying negative things about the city, the fans, and the team were they in Vince's position. Vince has been goaded to doing so dozens of times for the past four years, and has refused to sink to their level. The guy's all class, whether you like him or not.
