Default Vancouver Sun: Why Steve Nash won't sign in Toronto

Quote:
Why? The reasons are actually plentiful, and from both camps. As much Nash has a connection to his home country he has very little to the city of Toronto. Granted the Raptors are the only Canadian based club in the NBA, and having a professional outfit has certainly fertilized the basketball landscape in the country, but Nash has a much stronger emotional pull from his years in Phoenix than for a desire to play in his home country. As well being in the latter stages of his hall of fame career if Nash was going to leave Phoenix he would likely go to a team that has short term potential to win an NBA crown and believes that his addition would be the final championship piece. That would be the Miami Heat, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Atlanta Hawks, the New York Knicks, or the Indiana Pacers.

It would seem that the Heat, having two players in Lebron and Wade who always have the ball in their hands, would not be an ideal for Nash’s diverse and unique skills. But for a team like Indiana with a number of young and talented players, having Nash’s leadership as well as his ability to see the court could prove to be that final piece. If Nash is looking for a playoff run on a team that would look to him for leadership then the pacers might be his final destination.

Nash has stated that he has little desire in chasing a crown. He doesn’t want to be Karl Malone who, in his final season, left Utah for the Lakers in an attempt to win the title that eluded him with the Jazz. It eluded him with the Lakers as well. Nash is more concerned with finding a home that suits him, both professionally and personally, and he doesn’t want to be just another player on a contending team. Sure he says it would be nice to play for Miami — who wouldn’t say that. He also wouldn’t say that there wouldn’t be any point in going to Miami since the only time he would see the ball would be in practice.

As far as the Raptors are concerned Bash would bring a bevy of benefits with him, but none that they are really looking for—after all this is a club that is talking about making the playoffs next year, not about contending. For a 38 year old with maybe two quality seasons remaining it wouldn’t make sense for the Raptors to spend what will likely be $20 million over two years on a player that won’t be with them when they contend.

The Raptors feel they already have a quality veteran point guard. In Jose Calderon the Raptors have someone who can be classified as Steve Nash lite. Calderon is a leader on the floor and in the dressing room, and his priority on the court is to run the offensive sets and get others involved in the play — something Nash executed so well. Calderon is also seven years younger than Nash and will be entering next season in the final year of his contract. So if at season’s end the Raptors decide they want to move in another direction it won’t cost them anything. Nash would certainly be a marketer’s dream if he came to Toronto. He would attract a great deal of interest and take the pressure off all the other players. He would essentially turn into the team spokesman, whereas this season it was Coach Dwane Casey.

There are a number of good reasons for the Raptors to sign Steve Nash, there just happen to be a great deal more reasons for it not to occur — for both parties.
Raptors fans may hope but Steve Nash will not sign with Toronto for next season | Vancouver Sun

He's got what, maybe 2 quality seasons left? We want him on the Blazers really bad. He wants to get into the playoffs though. That's one of the biggest reasons why he probably won't sign with a tanker. He'd just stay in Phoenix if he's gonna go though a rebuild. I see him on the Knicks, maybe Heat, Boston if they move Rondo, a return to Dallas, something of that nature for Nash.

I still just don't see him going to the Heat. I know he can space the floor but the whole reason you get Nash is to let him run your offence. How does New York afford him? And why would he want to play with Carmelo, both stylistically and after what he did to D'antoni?

Nash in Atlanta sounds interesting, although I wouldn't put any money on that happening.

No connections to Toronto?

How about the one between him and the guy that runs the basketball team?

Who wrote this nonsense?

Nash had, what, two quality seasons left in him, in each of the past 4 years. Balderdash. Until he keels over on the court from the arthritis, I'm not putting a cap on how long he can play.

Good point about Colangelo (and Triano) there Acie.

I'm not totally on board with Nash anyway. Exciting and instant improvement but a temporary fix. You will still be looking for your point guard of the future. So why not seek that guy out now to grow with the team?
