Default Valanciunas, Young Menís Player Of 2011

FIBA Europe announced on Monday that Jonas Valanciunas of Lithuania is the Young Men's Player of the Year for 2011.

Valanciunas was the winner of the expert panel vote* ahead of the U20 European Championship MVP Nikola Mirotic of Spain and came in second in the public vote.

The Lithuanian international propelled the Baltic nation to the top of the podium at the FIBA U19 World Championship in July by leading the tournament in points and rebounds.

Fresh off being selected by the Toronto Raptors with the fifth overall pick in the NBA Draft, the 2.10m center turned heads with his stratospheric performances since the very first game of the tournament.

Valanciunas, who averaged a double-double with 23 points and 13.9 rebounds per game, saved the best for last.

He exploded in the final against Serbia with 36 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots, to secure the gold medal for his team and earn MVP honours almost unanimously.

In August, the 20-year-old joined the senior national team at EuroBasket 2011.

His collaboration with veteran point guard Sarunas Jasikevicius provided some of the best pick'n'roll plays in the history of the EuroBasket and the host nation fans with some of their warmest memories of the tournament.

Valanciunas had already shown he could compete as equal against senior players earlier in the year, at club level.

He featured in 16 games in his maiden Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season with Lietuvos Rytas and had 7.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.

"Jonas is so quick, he is so agile, he is so skilled that sometimes I forget how tall he is," said FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson.

"He stands out from other players his age and if one considers what a hugely gifted generation we are talking about, this is an incredible feat," Mr Rafnsson added.

"A lot of people compare Valanciunas to Sabonis, but he has his own distinct style," said FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.

"What he does have in common with Arvydas is the potential to develop into a big man who dominates the game at both ends of the floor, just like the Lithuanian legend did," Mr Zanolin concluded.

Some nice recognition. Maybe a bit over the top saying he provided some of he bet PnR plays in the history of eurobasket, but that's not a bad thing.

Man I'm excited to see this kid next season. Hopefully he can adjust somewhat quickly to the NBA.

I'm actually a bit worried some members seem to expect JV to be puting inpresive numbers in the NBA right away. (I blame all the hype that was creted around him) Kid is good but he is only 19 and still too skinny. For NBA. I just hope you all will be patient with him.

It isn't surprise taking into account that Kanter didn't accomplished anything for a long time. Yes, he is a (very) nice player right now, but it is hard to believe he will be exceptional in the future.
BTW, Nikola Mirotic (second place) is awesome. Hope he will join Raps or Zalgiris at some point of his career.

Just a seven footer who's lights out from 15ft in. Can pass, shoot, dribble, and makes his teammates better.
He's not like Sabonis at all. The only reason he gets compared to him is that he's from the same country.

The closest player to Sabonis in terms of skillset right now is Marc Gasol, on both ends of the court.
DeMarcus Cousins has a lot of Sabonis in him as well. When I first saw Cousins play, I was having flashbacks from the early 90s.
They are both smaller and less gifted. But there are similarities, way more than with Jonas - Sabonis.

I agree JV is nothing like Sabonis, I would say that Bogut plays somewhat similar to Sabas. JV has really unique skill set I really can't think of a player who would be JV like.

Alright, another thread that has spiralled out of control.

I don't know what's gotten into some of you guys lately, but the next dude being a giant douche (and I don't care who you are and how long you've been around) is gone for good.

And to the guys who got infractions, don't even think about questioning them or trying to tell me you were only joking around.

So for all the people saying Jose needs to be traded don't you think he would be nice to see with JoVal? Atleast until the contract ends?

Not really... What makes you think Jose would make JV so great? Honestly I think it would put more pressure on JV. Bargs would be off sitting somewhere else being clueless on D, and JV would have to watch not only his man, but all the ones blowing by Jose...

Bargs was rotating pretty well this year actually... I duno why you're critisizing him. I think it would just be good for JV because Jose can let get someone like Amir Johnson easy points. Only for a year though then bye bye Jose. Of course it depends on what we draft.
