Default Valanciunas dominates FIBA under-19 warm-up

For the people who didn't get to watch the stream, but even if you did watch it.. still a good read.

Quote:
TORONTO - Many Raptors fans were in hysterics when Jonas Valanciunas’ name was called at the NBA Draft last Thursday because they had never seen him play.

A whole bunch of them got their first look at the big Lithuanian on Tuesday afternoon and it was hard not to be impressed, even if he wasn’t exactly going up against Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell.

Valanciunas was the best player on the floor as Lithuania humiliated the United States 108-75 in a tuneup for the FIBA under-19 championship, which gets underway on Thursday in Latvia.

The fifth overall selection by the Raptors imposed his will on the smaller Americans, compiling a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks and a steal.

Valanciunas is rail-thin and must pack on 15-25 pounds before he can compete effectively in the NBA, but against those his own age, he has consistently dominated.

Previously, Valanciunas was named MVP of FIBA’s under-18 and under-16 tournaments.

The Americans, including 6-foot-9, 220-pound Florida big man Patric Young — a potential lottery pick in 2012 — had no answers for his length and intensity.

Valanciunas constantly got under the skin of his opponents at both ends and drew a ton of free throw attempts, going 11-15 from the stripe.

Rusty since he had only been back in Lithuania for a few days since being introduced in Toronto on Friday, Valanciunas missed four of his first five shots from the floor before going 5-of-6 from the field the rest of the way.

While he badly needs to add strength — some of his layups need to be dunks at the next level and his post moves will improve with more bulk — he impressed with his positioning, willingness to mix it up, the chaos he caused inside thanks to his long arms and his ability to get off the floor quickly for second and third attempts at shots or rebounds.

Valanciunas calmly took — and knocked down — his only attempt at a mid-range jumper.

All in all, an impressive performance, considering how much of a whirlwind the past couple of weeks have been for him.

IN TOUGH

Canada will be in tough at the under-19 tournament which runs from Thursday, July 11.

Valanciunas and Lithuania are in Canada’s group, along with Croatia and Korea.

At least one Canadian won’t be intimidated though.

“Toronto is my hometown, so it will be very interesting to play against (Valanciunas, the new Raptor),” 7-foot-4 big man Sim Bhullar told FIBA.com about the challenge.

Canada will open against Korea on Thursday.

Heard he's been always like this dominates against people his age but struggles against those who are not. Still this is very good news. The one thing though, I wish the tallest guy he went up against wasn't 6-9...

Great, love the stat line.

Also love this commentary:

Hes not struggle against men. it's just different level, so of course hes not dominant yet, but hes very efficient and always put consistent numbers.

Hes one of those players, who has no problems to translate his game. I see a lot of young players and they always struggle against better and more experienced players at first, but Jonas put double double in his first Euroleague game ever. Euroleague is by far better competition than Lithuanian league.

I think by the end of the 2012 season JV will be the best player to come out of this draft and the Cavs are going to wish they scooped him with the 4th

This is nice to know and I dont mind he stay back for 1 more year because 99% is a lockout and I hope its a lockout. You add Valanciunas and next year 2012-2013 to our core (Barnes ^_^) then you have yourself a true rebuild

That was his first Euroleague game? Are you sure, I know that he played in under 16 and under 18 but idk if that was Euroleague or not. But wow that's really good if that's really his first time but if it is his inexperience might be a concern.

I was talking about last season. It was his first year in Euroleague. Before that, he played only against Lithuanian scrubs, no one expected he will be effective player.

I remember how it was. One week before Euroleague, Rytas fired head coach and hired new one. When coach came, it was just few days left before Euroleague game. Coach himself had no idea what his players can do. It looks he passed on Jonas. You know, 18 year old unexperienced 240 lbs. center... So when they played that Euroleague game, coach started big Turk as a starting C. Least talented bigman, but hes big and all right defender (big body). But as expected, it didn't worked. Finally coach let Jonas play, he was like backup plan. Barely played, only 16 minutes, but scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. It was his first Euroleague game, 10/10 in 16 minutes.

I like that he can play sub-par and have his team win by 30+.

In addition, he still dominated despite not playing to his full ability.
