Valanciunas compared to Chris Bosh

:suspicious:

:bosh:

Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas got defensive last Friday when asked if he would take English classes this coming season to prepare for his arrival to Toronto. Not a surprising reaction after the heat he took following his post-draft interview.

Just as his English, Valanciunas’ game is a work in progress. But at this point, the latter is way more advanced. Valanciunas comes off a terrific performance at the World Junior Championship, where he led the Lithuanian National Team to the gold medal and finished as the top scorer, rebounder and shot blocker in the tournament.

Darius Maskoliunas was Jonas Valanciunas' head coach at Lietuvos Rytas last season and recently shared some of his thoughts on Toronto's first round pick from the 2011 NBA Draft.

“He works hard in practice and never talks back,” Maskoliunas said. “He’s 100 percent concentrated. It was a pleasure to work with him."

“I see him as a Chris Bosh type,” Maskoliunas said. “He can play back to the basket, facing the basket… He has to take that mid-range shot. He can shoot it. But he can run, he can rebound, he even has a three-point shot."

except that bosh can't play with his back to the basket.

last thing this team needs is another chris bosh. i hope they are only being compared because bosh used to be a raptor (therefore the familiarity for comparison)

Tbh, this team needs any big time talent to build around.
I understand you guys have some bad memories with Bosh. But a young Bosh is great when all you got is DeMar and maybe Davis.

That said, I don't see the comparison. Yes, physically they are very similar right now, and Valanciunas certainly has the touch to develop mid range game.

But I doubt Valanciunas is done filling out. According to his draftexpress report, he's not even done growing.
He also has an incredibly strong motor.
And he is willing to play hard on D against physically stronger opponents - even though the skills are lacking for now.
I think Pau is a much more accurate projection. Idk if the talent is there, but in terms of style they should be close.

No offense but Pau is a pu$$y on defense. In terms of offense and passing I could see.

I think JV will become his own man and comparing him to other players is kinda ridiculous tbh. We set ourselves up by doing that with crazy expectations and an elevated bar. Can't we admire JV's skillset now and be patient to see what he brings to the Raps when he's ready?

JV will be special on his own.

A three point shot? LOL

Actually, passing is the one red flag for me. Pau has always been a good passer, even for the Spanish youth teams. Valanciunas is not so far.

As for Pau being a pu$$y... Idk if he is or not, but he's a good defender. Pau at his best is an incredible two way player.
There are mental lapses and inconsistencies with Pau that Valanciunas isn't displaying so far despite his young age. And I hope he'll avoid them. { Then again, that stuff is hard to see without the biggest stage, so we'll see in a few years. }

You can do both. I'm admiring the summer games now. And raising expectation bar. It's fun! :P

He reminds me of Bosh to some degree, as I have said a while ago. I don't see how that's a bad thing at all. Although I would like to see this guy's career take a better direction. I think he could be looking at being like Bosh as something of a floor, with a very different ceiling, but that's getting way ahead of myself. I guess if I was going to be most hopeful without getting carried away with expectations, I'd be happy to see a sturdy big that is left unhampered to get better every year for a good long time.

If he can rebound like bosh and play at the rim and block shots more then Bosh does i'd be thrilled. But to say the last thing we need is a player like Bosh is a little crazy. IMO i'd rather have a front court of Bosh/Jonas then Bargs/Jonas.

He has 100% since he's playing Pro-Basketball :cookie:

You have to work on 3s when you have not so strong body.

OP13 08-18-2011 08:59 AM

He knows shit about Bosh. That coach didnt see any NBA games in his life.

Someone being better than Bargnani does not qualify them for role model status. Just saying.

Not that I think Bosh isn't a good model for a young player - Jonas has the grit that Bosh never really showed, so if he can develop Bosh's skillset, give or take, and keep that fire, he'll be a special player.

But it wouldn't be like that, it would be Bosh and Bargnani versus new Bosh and Bargnani. I think JV is much more of a willing big than Bosh, who sometimes looked at himself as a wing player.... I think the comparison has been made out of Raptor familiarity.

JV's ceiling is much more than Bosh's talent has come to be..... but a young Bosh had a high ceiling too that he has yet to achieve.

The man's best friends are former NBA players.
Not to mention all the players with NBA xp he coached, scouted or coached against.
I bet he knows a thing or two about the NBA. :)

But a man who knows much can still be wrong.

i meant it as a soft, jump shooting big man and when is the best player on a team can't lead it.

Have you ever watched CB play?

I get really annoyed with people slagging Bosh off. He's a great all round player, multiple all star, great temprement and is a great example to younger players, despite being young himself.

If Miami had given CB the ball and not LBJ it may have been a different story.

He's under rated, for sure (except by people who know what they're doing, such as Pat Riley who awarded him a max contract for a very good reason).
