I was thinking that as well, definitely a risky decision. The man obviously didn't consider fan reaction when making this selection, nor should he have.

Actually i don't understand the skepticism. Hey if Jonas and Andrea were off season buddies and trained together, then yes i would understand.

Connecting this pick to the one of 5 years ago or whenever it was is only doing so on the most superficial and prejudicial of all reasons. Not saying that that's what you are personally doing (really it's not my intention to accuse you of that so don't take it that way), but you know there are idiots who do feel that way and that's most unfortunate.

Well, I said to myself before draft. If Colangelo takes Euro, he is dead. I dont know, its like criticize soviet russia by living in soviet russia. You better dont do that...

But I think fans are adults and they should understand not every Euro is the same. And even if some players failed, it does not mean you can mock them. They tried their best and worked hard.

when they passed on him and grabbed Tristan, BC probably couldnt believe it and jumped to grab him.
i have a feeling JV was number one on BC's list, with Knight being second... and when JV became available, BC was all over him.

i must admit i was upset initially, but i like what im hearing and seeing.... if we are going the Defensive route, this kid may be exactly what we need.
its just a little tough for some raps fans to swallow, seeing how our first euro pick is panning out. hopefully this time will be different.
i think it will be.
It's too bad Aleksandar Radojević just couldn't get healthy.

That's who you're talking about, right?

Considering that BC is essentially on a 2-year clock, my hat is off to him. Especially if the pick pans out, as I expect it will. I have nothing but respect for Lithuanian basketball and expect a tough, hard-nosed worker from the land that lives and breathes basketball.

Isn't Leo from a Latvian family? Not the same nation, then.

Initially, reading we picked another tall euro instead of Knight and Walker broke my heart. I couldn't really recall which one of "those Euros" Valanciunas was. I was also kind of confusing him with Jan Vesley (who sounds overrated - he reminds me more of Adam Morrison/Jonathan Bender than Kirilenko) or, gulp, Donatas Motiejunas.

After spending a good hour reading up on Valanciunas, I'm much more confident on the pick. He looks like he could turn into a 10/10/2 center or more! Knowing that Jonas is a true 5 and not a soft 4 is huge. He is absolutely nothing like Bargnani - he's a banger, a rebounder, and scores much of his points on dunks, drives, and putbacks. A much more apt comparison is a younger, rawer Pau Gasol.

The fact that Jonas is one of the youngest players in the draft helps build my confidence in the pick. Donatas was born in 1992, compared to 1990 for Motiejunas, Vesley and Kemba and 1989 for Jimmer. He's also apparently one of the most efficient players on the draft board, and a high FT% shooting true center. That sound is checkboxes being ticked. 7 feet tall in shoes? Check. Healthy, good motor? Check. Efficient? Check. Good rebounder (a massive Raptor weakness)? Check. I could care less whether he has a well developed post game or not right now!

When Jonas sad that he was weaker than the competition in his interview, that could have been a shoe drop moment had he been a ~22 year old prospect. Considering that he just celebrated his 19th birthday last month, and the fact that he's playing in the top Euroleagues, his comment actually became endearing and appropriate to me.

I don't mind at all if he spends another year overseas, especially with the big question mark that is the impending lockout.

No, his mother immigrated to Canada from Lithuania. There was even talk of him playing for their national team back in 92. Also, surely you haven't forgotten his lessons with Chuck on how to properly pronounce Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
