2) Valančiūnas. Let's take the first three letters of the surname ("Val") and find the first most appropriate english word to represent him - the Wall.

Well, he could be just Jonhnny at the momet. The second part of the nickname (the Wall) he would earn later on - when added more strength and muscles

What are your thoughts?
Let's just shorten it to John Wall.

I think he'll be one of those players that the announcers will use their first name. Jonas is not hard at all if you remember the j sounds like a y.

Somehow I am cool on him what concerns being a buster. Just the kid needs to be treated with patience and care. Not to be pushed too early to show quick results. He is a hustle player, a down to earth guy with tough and competitive mentality. Will be ok.

But I am not so sure about the other lithuanian draft - Donatas Motiejūnas. His cocky and supa star attitude, which is present on his interviews, worries me.

Hello guys!

I've been lurking here nearly a year, but decided to write just now
I was thinking the main quality of Jonas is not his arms, length and similar things. For me his main qualities are bbIQ (to some point - a thing big man sometimes lack) and, especially, leadership. There are players who has tons of tallent, but the lack of leadership does not allow them to become great players (like Andrea who has talent to become next Dirk). I've seen him (Jonas) playing in important and very competitive games he was playing during junior championships and i can tell you that he never dissapears when the game is on the line and he never breaks mentaly when his team is loosing. He can win the important games by himself if the team needs it.
I'm watching international players (who play in NBA) closely for nearly a decade and i know big european talents which game did not translate successfuly. Therefore i will NOT say that Jonas is guranteed success - we will see. But, (big) IF he will play in the NBA as he is playing in international tournaments, then Raptors made a really smart move as Raptors team is lacking such the player very much.

Its easier to play a leader in young team, espessially when you are head and shoulders above competition. Good thing that he takes pressure well tho.

On the Cavs forums they're calling him Big V. I think Big V or V are the nick names that'll stick. We'll see, though.

I am getting a tiny bit pessimistic about seeing him here a year from now.

The reported buyout agreement calls for another year in Lithuania (good) and a $2.4 million buyout figure after that. Considering that the Raps are only allowed to pay $500K of that and that #5 pick is slated to make around $2.3 mil in his first season according to current CBA (and you can bet the figure is going to be even lower in the new one) - he'd be playing for nothing in his first year. I hope Raps can come to some sort of "understanding" with the Lithuanian team to drop the figure...

According to Hoopshype, he'll would get 2.9 in his first NBA season.

Perhaps I've looked in the wrong place for rookie scale, but one has to assume that the new CBA is going to lower those figures significantly.

Perhaps the owner of Rytas is going to wake up one fine morning with his favorite cow's head next to him?

one of the key things about recent drafts and bayless has been attitude. They have clearly been partly targeted for good attitude. Ed and Demar are both level headed and hard workers. Bayless has a bit of that cocky swagger but he is also a very hard worker and he's a scrapper (in the good way.)

happy that jonas seems to be following that trend. attitude can not replace talent but it can make a huge difference. even if jonas doesn't fulfil his potential talent wise he could become a decent nba player from having a great attitude.

No wories - he will come the next year. The rest of the contract (with Lietuvos Rytas) he will pay by himself.

I am not worried as such, just musing. How exactly is he going to pay it "by himself" if the amount is not lowered from $1.9 mil he is personally on the hook for and his salary for the first year is either around that figure or even below it?

Or does he have a rich uncle no one here knows about?

I will assume that Raps management works with Rytas to either lower the overall amount to something more reasonable or allow him to pay it in installments in exchange for future favours (like, for instance, Raps playing an exhibition game there one day).

In Lithuanian press there was a report that Jose Calderon called Jonas a very good center and is very glad that they picked a center not a playmaker

While Linas Kleiza instantly after the pick got a phone call from Dainius Zubrus who plays in NHL for the New jersey Devils - and the first words of Kleiza were "SUPER"

Zubrus was sitting at the same table together with Jonas and supporting his fellow-countryman:

Well D'uh. But the fact is, he was a leader and a winner. 2 golds, 2 MVP's. Hes just not some ordinary guy from college. He may never gonna be a NBA star, but he knows what it is to be a leader. He already has winners mentality.

Motivational fodder to improve leaps and bounds for that second contract .
