The lottery system, as it is, is messed up.

Teams shouldn't move up or down by more than 2 or 3 spots.

Getting those top 3 picks to teams that really need it is a big part of maintaining a competitive balance.

UPDATE: According to Eric Koreen of the National Post-

So he will come over after 1 year.
Dammit, looks like we are stuck with Bargnani as center for another year.

Doubtful since they have said they're going after a top Center. Besides i'm thinking they're gonna want to see if Bargnani can excel at the PF position (if he's not moved) and determine if they're keeping him before Val comes over here.

It's unfortunate, yes, but if teams can't move up or down then tanking becomes even more of a problem. And teams can only move down 3 spots.

No doubt. Every time there is a LBJ, Blake Griffin, etc in the draft you're going see teams go with NBDL players on their roster for the year. lol

Heck you can tank 5 straight year and get the #1 pick every year and do work. NBA I think there has to be a lottery like that. Works better. NFL? Not so much since bust rate is higher and lot more money.

This guy is going to have to put on some major weight if we are going to have him play Center. Rebounding will be key. He's listed at 240 but he can easily put on another 10-20 pounds without loosing much quickness.

I just don't think that a team that barely missed the playoffs because their superstar was injured for the season should have a shot at a #1 pick. In fact, a team that barely misses the playoffs shouldn't have a shot at the #1 pick regardless.

I'm not saying don't mix it up. I'm saying that maybe confine it a little more so that, for example, the bottom 7 teams have a shot at #1, the bottom 8 teams have a shot at #2, the bottom 9 teams have a shot at #3, etc. Also, no team should be able to drop more than 3 spots. So if the worst team misses out on 1, 2, 3, then they automatically get 4.

There's a number of ways to narrow the number of teams that have a shot at #1. It's not an all or nothing scenario, and I personally believe that, as it is, far too many teams can get the #1 pick. That pick should be for franchises that are really in trouble.

Hmmm... so how many Biyombo games have you watched, or did you just watch highlights from YouTube? You do realize that scouts and GMs actually watch entire games, in person, in assessing talent. I would bet that very few GMs had Biyombo higher on their board than JV.

.
That's the way things already work. No team can drop more than 3 spots. When the Raps finished with the 3rd worst record, they were guaranteed at least a top 6 pick.

As the system currently stands, only the first 3 spots are determined by the ping poing balls. Then the order reverts back to wins/losses. That's why you can't slip more than 3 spots.

That's correct.

But the key part of my argument was the first half of my post. Which you deleted from the quote.

To be clear, I deleted it because I see how it's different from the current system. In the part I quoted, I thought you were suggesting a change. That's why I was pointing out that it works that way already; it wouldn't be a change. If you genuinely already knew that, sorry for wasting your time!

Vala- watever the fuck isnt gnna be playing center when he comes to the NBA! hes too skinny and has no strength. Hes gnna get wrecked badly by the likes of Horford, Howard, and Chandler. The NBA isnt the Euroleague. In the Euroleague theres little to no talent at all. He can play Center all day in the Euroleague, but hes probably gnna get shifted down to Power Forward when he comes to the NBA. Which sucks cuz we already have like 3 power forwards.

Damn - we just need to get Eddy Curry then. Where are all these monster C's you're seeing? Chandler, which you mention was skinny as hell too. And saying there is no talent in the Euroleague is just ignorant. It is surely different, but there is plenty of talent there. Please refrain from the extreme statements that border on offensive.

I'm a fan of putting the ball handlers in place first and THEN moving on to the question of bigs.

Let's be real too.... DAL was the anomaly here.. LA was lead by a guard (Kobe) and BOS by wing players as well (Allen, Pierce, Rondo).

No. Because even though he may have played big minutes SOME games he wasn't relied upon EVERY game to carry the team the way that some of these european rely on their stars.

If we wanted to go big I think that I may have gone with Biyombo, who seems to have an "NBA-ready" body and a knack for shotblocking.

We'll see what JV has to offer though.
Its good to have Guards and Wing players, but there werent any you could get in the draft with the kind of players you are referring to. Kemba and Knight are good but no one can say that they above average or have very high potential, that is why so some teams passed on them.

you're confusing talent with physical power.
Look at Luis Scola from Rockets - he has no huge muscles and weight but has talent. Which is enough for him to get 18 ppg and 8 rebounds.
By the way, for me, Jonas playstyle looks a lot like Tyson Chandler's
