Patience is a virue, even if Raptors got brandon knight or kemba they wouldnt have made a huge difference in the imediate future.

Their is a risk when you take any player, however after watching videos on our #5 pick you can easily see this guy has amazing hands and has an aggressive mind set.

We have a good mix of bigs now Bargs, Amir, Ed Davis, and Jonas and possibly evans as well.

If this guy was not european no one would be saying anything.....just saying

For BC's sake he better hope this guy isn't a bust, another shitty Euro and he may never find work again. At least he better not around here if it doesn't pan out.

I give credit to Colangelo and his staff for having the stones to not bend to the will of uninformed fans and analysts. They could have taken a pg that they felt wasn't as good as the hype given, but instead they trusted their process and made a confident decision just as they have every year. Bargnani, DeRozen, and Davis are good reasons to trust their process. Not many players from each draft can be considered significant upgrades in talent over these three.

i've seen this on here more then once. why do you give credit to BC for drafting someone different than what we had selected on our message boards. have you ever seen a team bend over and select the fans choice when there was a better selection on the board.

Ric Bucher was just on ESPN and gave Raptors a lot of love.

1. Said Raptors were the 2nd best draft winners. Got the best player in the draft at #5.
2. Was ask who was the biggest steal of the draft? Yes you guess it he went on and said Jonas Valenciunas at 5. Said he was surprise he was there and was the best pick of the NBA draft.

Lithuanian league highs (only this season highs) : 23 points (in 22 minutes), 18 rebounds (13 offensice, in 21 minute), 5 blocks (in 22 minutes)

Hope it helps.
Thanks for that info. Guess time will tell. Hopefully Colangelo does some more work this off-season, so people stop saying "we aren't going anywhere next year anyway" You hope your GM can improve the team and not continue with this tanking nonsense that some people here seem to be happy about.

I think it was a little bit of the fact that Jonas is a very thin big, because of the Raptors past experiences with being pushed around in the playoffs a few years and always getting beat by the teams with bigger stronger players. It wasn't all to do with him being European for the reaction IMO. As long as he doesn't become like Bosh (never really adding bulk) He could turn out okay (I hope)

I give BC credit not for trying to decipher the popular pick, but for picking the best available even though the results might not come in time to help him keep his job. If he can make some good moves by this time next year, allowing for that change in the culture to finally take place for real, then I'd be happy to have him stick around under new ownership.

With the way that the game is being played today I was actually looking forward to drafting either Kemba or Knight to solidify our backcourt for the next 4-5 years with DD and Bayless. Guard play is EXTREMELY important these days and ours has been weak for a while.

That being said I'm eager to see what this Jonas kid can do against NBA competition. I hope that he's as good a rebounder and shotblocker as he's been rumoured to be.

I still worry some about another player that's going to get burned out always playing big minutes for his national team.

I don't see how those guys can be thought to have solidified any backcourt automatically. It's a possibility, but that's all. I'd have been very hopeful with either pg, but I'd also be pretty tentative about what I expected. That's why BPA works so well. Expectations can surpass my hopes. There just might be some waiting.

Yes, but if you look at the last championship teams:

Dallas, LA, Boston they won with play from their bigs.

Chandler was a difference maker. Gasol/Bynum were crucial. Boston with Perkins/KG.

Guard play is good, but bigs win you championships.

Nobody is happy with tanking. I think everyone here wants to be a top team in the NBA.

Just doesn't happen over night. Look at OKC. 4 straight terrible seasons before they made the playoffs(losing in round 1), then next year making the WCF. Takes work. OKC drafted Durant, Westbrook, Harden, and Ibaka during those years. The key core of their team and once their team was close to the next step they made trades to upgrade it even more(Perkins).

Patience is the key but that is always tough being a fan. If Raptors suck again next year and get another top pick then maybe they can add a player like Harrison Barnes and then have a core of Demar, Barnes, Davis, and Jonas. That looks pretty good on paper. A step in the right direction at least. It is tough to build a team through FA/trades for Toronto and a lot of other NBA teams. Really need to start with the draft and that is what is happening.

Well, its in Lithuania league. In the NBA, and with basket interference, we better don't expect that But it shows how hard he tries. Amazing hustle player and his effort and length, 7'5 wingspan allows him dominate the boards.

If you look at past 2 years, Jonas had major career run and translate his game in the higher level. He was consistent all year and he always put some numbers, no matter is Lithuanian village team or Barcelona... And he always play good against bigger guys, like Boban Marjanovic. yes, Boban is terrible, but he is so huge, I mean enormous, he is so beyound believe big, people think his pics photoshoped (by the way, i posted some of his pic, in funny pic archive thread) .

Comparing other Lithuanian, Donatas Motiejuas, Donatas always had problems to translate his game and he always had problems against bigger guys. Thats why he is more likely a bust. Jonas is a hustle player and hustle always translates.

After 2-3 years he will be Howard Nr.2 or bad worst CB4. Linas Kleiza + Jonas Valančiūnas = Raptors 4ever
