Raptors USA Today: Derozan stepping up in 2nd year

Quote:
More comfortable and confident in his second year, DeRozan wants to stand out.

DeRozan has 14 games of 20 or more points — but 11 since Dec. 1. Those include 37 points against the Houston Rockets on Dec. 31 and 30 against the Miami Heat on Jan.22. He is developing into what the Raptors envisioned for the ninth pick of the 2009 draft — an athletic wing who can score near the rim or on mid-range shots.

"I know and understand the game a lot better than I did my first year. I was learning on the go," DeRozan said.

He is among emerging second-year players earning larger roles:

DeRozan has stood out. Playing about 12 more minutes a game this season, he has increased his scoring average to 15.5 from 8.6 as the Raptors rely more on his offense.

DeRozan has always analyzed game video. Now he has a better understanding of what he is seeing — when to shoot, when to drive, when to pass.

"It's just knowing your personnel and understanding the offensive and defensive end. Once you get that down pat, a lot of things come easy," DeRozan said. "I didn't get frustrated. I knew at one point it was all going to come together, and I stayed patient."

Toronto Raptors coach Jay Triano challenged DeRozan to make the rookie-sophomore game during All-Star weekend this season. DeRozan didn't play in the game last season.

"He's on a little bit of a mission," Triano said. "I told him 'Your goal is to make the sophomore game.' When you look at his numbers, it's a pretty good argument as to why he should."

Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said the team has been meticulous in helping DeRozan improve

Classic Triano instead of challenging his players to win games, he is challenging them to make some meaningless sideshow during all star weekend.

Colangelo should be recognized for the meticulous approach to player development. Props!

Your Triano hate is coming through a little strong here,
nothing wrong with challenging a player to be in allstar weekend.
Last time I checked you have to play pretty well to make the rookie-sophmore game.
It's a coach's job to motivate their players to play well, right?

yep - I can live with Triano's handling of DeMar. When it comes to the team - meh - we'll see where that goes I guess.

WTF at challenging him to make the sophmore team??? lmao

i hope that was one of many challenges he posed for DeMar, not thee major challenge of the year.

It all equates to him encouraging him to get better. Who gives a shit. I would assume it's a small part of what he's talked to him about when it comes to getting better. Really people, we have bigger fish to fry.

His scoring is up from last season, but his scoring effiiciency (TS%) has plummeted from last season.

he still need to drastically improve on D
use his athleticism even more, whenever he drives to the net and makes those layups its because underneath it all he's shying away from the D, sure he makes them for the most part but if he showed some aggression by hanging and dunking instead of hanging and flipping a layup people would shy away from defending him at the net
develop a real shooting game, not even necessarily 3s
develop handles
develop a game when guys double team him, when they double team him its like a guaranteed turnover

thats a lot of stuff but if he really wants to be a real player in this game he needs those minimum
