USA Today: Calderon could be on Lakers radar

Quote:

Guards Chris Duhon and Darius Morris don't get it done when it comes to running D'Antoni's system, and you have to wonder if the team might look to stop the bleeding at the point guard spot. But where to find a tourniquet who can pass and shoot?

The Lakers (before Nash came aboard) were reportedly ready to sign the Toronto Raptors' Jose Calderon last summer if he was amnestied (which he wasn't), so one has to wonder if they might inquire about him. He's in the final year of his contract ($10.5 million) and playing behind starter Kyle Lowry. Unemployed options include Mike Bibby, Earl Boykins, Jannero Pargo or perhaps Mike James.
Lakers fan angst grows as team struggles under D'Antoni

Good news.

Dario 12-04-2012 02:44 PM

Just wondering, who would we get for him?

Calderon is a good backup pointguard, you want Lucas playing Calderon's minutes?

I cringe watching Lucas play 5 minutes.

It's Jose, Amir and Kleiza for Pau. That's what the Raps would do, the Lakers are waiting for us to implode and deal Jose and AB. My guess is they wait us out and we fold. Gasol comes here and suddenly his knee tendinitis is much more serious and we fold completely.

Nah dude, we just go and sign a third PG... there are vet guys out there for cheap.

Dario 12-04-2012 02:50 PM

we grab steve blake from them, hes a nice backup pt guard, if you REALLY don't want lucas to backup lowry

Dario 12-04-2012 02:51 PM

if we ever were to get gasol, he would need to go through some tests no?

Blake sucks. So does Duhon. There are min guys out there. Just grab one for depth. Heck, Bibby is just as good as those guys.

Yeah, they probably waived the physical... like GSW did with Bogut, another shitty trade result

Calderon makes sense for that team on so so many levels. He can hit the three and play the perimeter, wouldn't have to play too many heavy minutes and he's a competitor.

Gasol gives us relief in 2 years and is a large expiring next season. Hell, he can still play, he's just sulking and he'd be a useful mentor for JV.

fancylad 12-04-2012 02:59 PM

yup. get it done.

I would literally jump for joy if we got Gasol for Bargnani and Calderon. I can't think of anyone other than maybe Tim Duncan I'd rather mentor JV.

Calderon makes sense for D'Antoni. D'Antoni is a terrible coach and Calderon is a terrible PG. Misery loves company.

ZanTheMan 12-04-2012 03:10 PM

Lol yeah a disgruntled Gasol is just what we need right now. Going from the most succesful team in the NBA the last 5 years to one of the worst. We'd be lucky if he showed up at all. This trade only works if we could actually keep his Spanish buddy in T.O. Otherwise don't bother.

Stay away from those darn Lakers, they shouldn't always get what they want. And they have nothing of value that would help us, at least not immediately.

I just don't see Gasol in a mentor kind of role.

merlin2049er 12-04-2012 03:10 PM

Great, get him here. Who's going to back up Lowry? We'd need another PG.
