Default Upon reflection, Calderon has a good chance at MIP

Thinking about who has improved this season, who's on the radar other than Calderon? Calderon's improvement has been very nice:

12 pts, 8.4 assists from 8.7 points, 5.0 assists. League leader in assists to turnovers. He's averaging 15/10 for January, and his starter numbers are close to those.

-Dwight Howard has to have a serious chance at most improved. 23/15 from 17.6/12 is a pretty nice improvement.

-Bynum is definitely right up there; from 8 pts 6 boards on 56% to 13/10 on 64%, and a key to LAL being as good as they are.

-Rondo IMO doesn't make the cut for MIP. He's better across the board, but he's also playing with 3 all-stars and not even averaging 10 points or 5 dimes.

-Iguodala's numbers were actually better last year.

-Hedo's improved a lot this year too.

-Caron Butler has become even better than last year, in which he was even better than before...

-Brandon Roy has made the jump from good to great.

-LaMarcus has had too many injury problems to win it unless he finishes the season REALLY strong IMO.

Can Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster combine their stats: Travis Webster, to win the trophy?

Azubuke? Al Jefferson? Jose should be in the discussion too for sure.

Butler is the most under-rated player out there. Talk about a guy that deserves to be an All Star! Jose played just as good, if not better last season. But I don't really get this award at all anyway. If it's all just about numbers then I could care less - it means nothing, unless you're looking at guys that had next to no numbers and then actually contributed. It seems to require never having had a breakout up to the season in question, in terms of solid, consistent play. That takes a lot of guys in the list above out of the equation.

I think you have to lean towards guys like Outlaw and Bynum.

Jose wasn't as good last year. He was an awesome sparkplug off the bench, and held the fort when TJ was down briefly, but IMO there's no way he had the cojones to make a play like the driving and-1 layup he made against Boston last night.

In particular, his 3 point shot is vastly improved from the previous 2 seasons. As a rook he straight up didn't have 3 point range. Last year his 15 footer was money but his 3 was very shaky. This year he has consistent 3 point range.

Saying Jose was as good as this year last year is like saying Bargnani was as good as Dirk, he just didn't get the minutes...

Three areas where Jose has improved dramatically are:

-shooting, all over the court. 3 point percentage and FT% are way up. He's confident and consistent with his stroke

-passing lane defence/fast breaks: For January, Jose is averaging 2 steals a game!!! He's getting into a lot of passing lanes and picking off passes, and once he has the ball he's fucking gone - dude is fast like a mofo, yet always in control! His speed is under-rated!

-Decision making. It's like that errand pass to a "red" fan in jersey has haunted him. He was terrific last season at taking care of the ball (1.4 turnovers to 5 assists; 3.6:1 Assist:Turnovers), but this season he's dominating the league in that categry (1.57 turnovers to 8.5 assists; 5.4:1 Assists:Turnovers).

These aren't just numbers that go up linearly with playing time. More minutes means more tired legs and an aptitude to turn the ball over more. Yet Calderon has improved both his conditioning and his game to the point that he's even better at taking care of the ball.
-----------

I don't know why you have this hard-on for TJ Ford and you think that Jose is the exact same player as last year LX. In another thread you sarcastically spewed something like "yeah TJ Ford sucks," when practically nobody thinks that.

I love TJ and in the games he played in control this year he was sublimely good. He dismantled Atlanta, and almost won us our first matchup with Boston single-handedly. He's shooting a fantastic 49% for a PG.

However, IMO, he's not in the same league as Jose in terms of decision making, and getting the offense involved.

Nonetheless, he's a fantastic prospect, and a very talented PG with all-star potential. But I see Calderon leading this team in the future; Bargnani plays better with him, and look at how good Bosh is this month. Not saying it's all Calderon but having a PG who gets him the ball in the right places helps a lot.

I think you are stringing a lot of things together that don't necessarily fit together BBall.

If you want to give him an award for improvement over his season two years ago then I'm all for it.

Jose was way more than sparkplug off the bench last season, and all of his really good decision making came from driving and reading the defenses reactions.

And no - Jose is not the same exact player as last season, but he's only really gone beyond that in this game a couple of others. For obvious reasons. He has to keep out of foul trouble, and keep something in the tank. And so he has slowed the pace down drastically, and often the offense sputters as a result. Or have you not noticed all the sub 40 percent games? Good numbers for one player, do not always mean good numbers for the team. The team needs him to drive the ball, yes like TJ would. Bargnani said that was the secret to his improvement last night. It wasn't just because Jose was on the court with him , because you know what, I think Jose was there in the Mago's most dismal efforts.

I'm just saying look at the system. If a point guard plays within a good system he looks good, and his team can beat good teams. If not, he can still put up good numbers for himself, and take his team out of games against good teams. The same can be said of TJ and Jose. And the same could be said last season.

Jose's shot is definitely THAT much better this season, and that's great, particularly when he does everything to make everyone better like last night and still fills up the net. But please don't tell me he went from having no shot last year to what we see this year. I just think the way they look at this reward, he would have been more in the running last season. Now he's already established that he belongs, and his real challenge is to lead his team to an elite level, not win an MIP, although if he was able to do that, he probably should win it, but it's just not that kind of a reward - that's more of an MVP thing.

Yup I was going to Cave Man last night to the list but was tired.

After reading about his 20/20 game (20+ points and boards) I checked up on him and he's averaging crazy numbers - quietly becoming one of the best centers in the league. And 14 boards this year - amazing!

Another center who's quietly coming into his own is Andrew Bogut. It's always an issue of touches on that team, but he's starting to play very well, and starting to average center-like numbers; his blocks have gone from 0.5 last year to 1.7.
