“It’s disappointing for sure, but I think you have to have players who are a 100% committed to it.

“If not, it’s not going to happen for us.”

If Canada qualify for the Beijing Games, they will be able to add another player to replace Dalembert.

Next game against Croatia, good luck guys. My 2 cents: if Dalambert didn't want to play this game, send him to home. The group is always more important than a player.

Dr. J. Naismith 07-16-2008 10:39 AM

Kudos to Rautins and company for sending his ass home. :clapping:

Looks like Raptor fans have yet another player to boo when they visit the ACC this season. ;)

Ex2k 07-16-2008 10:44 AM

he didnt want to play or something?

fancylad 07-16-2008 10:47 AM

What the fuck is going on with this national team?!!

This is reeediculous if you ask me. We have NBA players who won't commit to the team for various reasons, then we get a great NBA player ho goes out of his way to join the sqaud, only to fight with management and be released? Now i have no idea who is in the wrong here, but as a supporter of the Canadian basketball team, this is beyond frustrating.

ya. pretty much all i can say is wow too. that and "this sucks."
caramba!

"All of this was happening while Dalembert, the Philadelphia 76ers centre was nowhere to be found. Dalembert, who joined the national team after being granted Canadian citizenship last summer, was innefective against Slovenia and was singled out by Rautins. Instead of responding Dalembert wasn't available for Canada during the do-or-die game, although it wasn't clear exactly the circumstances. He didn't appear to be on the Canadian bench during the game."

I wonder if Leo handled things the "right" way?

Not saying a coach should coddle a star, but fuck man, i'm just saying!

Dr. J. Naismith 07-16-2008 10:55 AM

Or maybe Sam's ego was too big. :confused2:

I refuse to lay blame on Leo just yet, because the impression I get is that Dalembert bailed or gave up on the team. I guess we'll have to wait and see what transpires. :(

MangoKidHoops 07-16-2008 10:58 AM

Maybe there's a reason why Steve Nash and Jamal Magloire didn't want to play for Canada - Leo Rautins.

Superjudge 07-16-2008 10:59 AM

You need to do something pretty bad to get Kicked off a team, Coach's don't just make that decision on a whim.

Let him Walk, he's not all that good anyhow.

For a team hurtin for size, he's exactly what we need. With him at the 5 and Joel Anthony at the 4, that is a solid front-court (in terms of against the other teams in the tournament)

I don't buy it Hoops. Phoenix were the ones I believe pressured Nash to reserve his energy for them and their NBA season seeing how Steve-O isn't a spring chicken anymore. Magloire had a bad attitude was "too good" to represent his country.

Leo's annoying as shit to listen to on TV, but I respect what he's been trying to do for the national program considering we don't have alot to choose from when it comes to talented experienced players. :(

The reason why Nash doesn't play aside from the obvious in getting rested, is because he disagreed with the guys who ran the team before Leo.

Claudius 07-16-2008 11:46 AM

It takes two to tango and there's definately two people to blame here. To what degree is debatable however.

I want to learn more about this story!

JayJayW 07-16-2008 11:49 AM

thats funny because whenever LEO is commenting on sam during nba games he always talks how he has is improved and how is a good canadian and how he loves canadian basketball

He disagreed with Leo being hired. Not Leo specifically, but a new coach.

Nash was close to Jay Triano, and said he'd never play for Canada again after Jay got let go. That's how I recall it anyway.

Honestly...I just don't care about this.

This wasn't an Olympic team with Dalembert, and it's not an Olympic team without him.

My guess is both sides are to blame to some degree. The bottom line is this though...Leo isn't endearing himself to the future elite Canadian players by kicking the only elite guy we've got off the team. Maybe he did deserve it, but when you've got one NBA player playing with a bunch of scrubs, (and I'm sorry, but that's what they are. Most of these guys aren't even summer league worthy) the NBA guy is going to feel like he deserves to be the focal point on and off the court.

If Leo isn't going to allow that, why should NBA guys lose their summer to spend months getting ready for and playing in a tournament they have little to no chance of winning anyway?

If I was Dalembert I wouldn't have been wasting my summer with this team in the first place. National pride is great and all, but despite what the Basketball Canada brass will have you believe, we aren't going anywhere fast. The only great Canadian player won't play for them, and call me crazy, but I don't consider Joel Anthony the next big hope.

Regardless of whether he deserved it, I feel this was a mistake from Leo. Setting the "no one is bigger than the program" precedent is fine when you've got plenty of talent to pick from. In this case though, you've got to be careful alienating our best players. When the next NBA starter quality Canadian kid comes around, what's his motivation to play for Canada? A chance to lose AND clash with a coach who clearly isn't interested in appeasing his best players?

Sorry to burst the idealistic bubble we're all viewing this from, but the bottom line is you do what it takes to please your stars. Especially when your team sucks.

Superjudge 07-16-2008 11:55 AM

Um ya.

What a bullshit post.

If you have a guy acting the part of the fool, you bench him, if he shit talks the the team, you cut him.

I don't care who it is.

'trane 07-16-2008 11:56 AM

AS vs SJ... this should be fun...

Soooo...lets say you're Mitch Kupchak last summer.

Kobe's gone...right?

You're welcome to support moves that you feel are morally right or whatever, just don't expect Canada to win any important basketball games in the forseeable future.
