UPDATE: Pacers Release Jarret Jack (Pg. 4)

Word of Indiana today is this:

Quote:

Point guard Earl Watson has agreed to sign with the Pacers once he clears waivers
Source: IndyStar.com

The Pacers are losing over $20M/yr and the cap may be lowered to $50M next season, which means the luxury tax mark will go down. For these reasons, accompanied with the fact that Watson is signing with them leads me to the conclusion that they will not match the Jack offer. A team struggling to make ends meet is not going to pay close to $15M/yr on PGs.

So, welcome Jarret Jack. The Raptors new combo guard. The man who will revive the bench.

Wooooooo Welcome Jack, cant wait to see you play some great bench minutes next year! I think he is going to do some good, and that is might be flying a little to far under the radar

Isn't the 7 days over?
This should be official.

Ligeia 07-18-2009 01:15 PM

Indiana has until Monday to match.

Yup, its not official till Tuesday. The rumours started last Saturday, but the papers weren't submitted to the league office until late Monday.

Tuesday.

Aren't we jumping the gun just a tad here?

Eh, Earl watson is with them now which probably means they don't have enough money or don't feel like matching the contract offer from BC.

I agree. I just hate putting the cart before the horse. I don't want to jinx it.

Someguy again 07-18-2009 01:27 PM

True, lets bump it when he REALLY comes.

Could you change the title for us to Official when it happens? :)

Are we in primary school? Come on guys, the writings on the wall. The Pacers made the move to find a cheap backup to TJ. They will not match. That franchise will be no frills from now on. They're financially crippled.

Pacers won't match offer for Jarret Jack

Pacers won't match offer for Jarret Jack | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star

Quote:

The Indiana Pacers will not match the four-year, $20-million offer the Toronto Raptors made to restricted free agent Jarrett Jack.

“It took a minute, but I was able to secure a contract for four years,” Jack said in a phone interview Sunday night. “I’m looking forward to playing with Chris (Bosh) again. It will be like our freshman year (at Georgia Tech) all over again.”

Jack said he’s scheduled to fly to Toronto Monday and there’s a press conference scheduled for Tuesday.

The decision by the Pacers not to match the offer isn’t surprising.

The Pacers are financially strapped and they want to avoid going over the league’s $69.9 million luxury tax threshold. Matching the offer would have put them in a tough position to make other roster moves.

The Pacers have already agreed to a deal with Jack’s replacement.

Guard Earl Watson, who was recently released by the Oklahoma City Thunder, will sign a one-year deal with the Pacers once he clears waivers later this week.

Jack, who will back up starting point guard Jose Calderon and also play some shooting guard, averaged a career-high 13.1 points and 4.1 assists last season.

“I wanted to be a Pacer come next season,” Jack said. “I’m indebted to coach (Jim) O’Brien for what he did for me last season. Not only him, but also (team president) Larry Bird and (general manager) David Morway. They put me in the position to play well and get a long-term contract. I’ll always be indebted to them.”
