Default update on free agency

from espn's chad ford:

Quote:
Based on current projections, only two teams -- the Memphis Grizzlies and the Philadelphia 76ers -- will have enough money under the cap to spend on the top-tier free agents.

The Memphis Grizzlies got under the cap by trading away Pau Gasol for expiring contracts. But Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace has sent signals that the team might not spend its estimated $12 million in cap room this summer. Instead, some expect the Grizzlies to wait until the summer of 2009, when they could have more cap space.

The Philadelphia 76ers could have around $20 million in cap space. But to get there, they would have to waive restricted free agents Andre Iguodala and Louis Williams, which seems very unlikely. Therefore, it appears the Sixers will have around $10 million in cap space
Both of these teams will have AT MOST 10 million available. Both teams are covered at the point, I doubt any will have the slightest interest in Jose as they have more pressing needs.

The only other danger could come from the Wizards, if they let Arenas walk away (the smart decision in my opinion). They will have some money to go for another pg, they play a fast style like we do, it's something to consider for Jose.

But all things considered, we should be able to sign Jose for ~8 million, in the TJ range without any outside competition!

Maybe this isnt the place, but I always thought all these dead weight contracts are holding the league back.

How many teams have 8 to 15 mil in dead contracts that could be used to develop players and give other guys a chance?

Jose's value will be in our reach come the summer. 6-7 range IMO.

While we can probably get him for MLSE + 1 cent, I think Bryan will try to give him equal salary with TJ, especially if he intends to keep them both.

Last night I was watching Outlaw defending Bryant and I started thinking if it would make sense to trade TJ and Moon for Outlaw and rodiguez and filler, I think Outlaw would fit the bill perfectly for us ...

Needless to say, I definitely expect some roster moves too. I agree with most that I'd be surprised if we were able to get Jose for 6 to 7 million per season. As Kuzzy alluded too, if you use players like Kapono and even Ford to guage what others may get, then I can't see Jose getting anything less than 8 million.

But yes, we definitely need to make some moves this summer whether its via trade or free agency. SF needs to be addressed. I love Moon and all, but he's a lifer coming off the bench, not starter material.

Wouldn't it be funny if they let Arenas go and sign Jose?

On second thought, not funny at all for Raptor fans.

Arenas will resign with the wizards. The only reason hes opting out is for the money and attention.

I wouldn't be so sure though, I doubt they can sign BOTH Arenas and Jamison. And while Jamison is not nearly as popular, he's clearly a more important player for them than Arenas is ...
