Under-the-Radar NBA Players Who Will Breakout in the Olympics

If there's anyone on this list that has the International pedigree to break out during the Olympics, it's Jose Calderon. Not only did he play his first six seasons in Spain before coming to the NBA, but he's also earned five medals with his Spanish National team.

Calderon is under-the-radar in the NBA partially because he plays up in Toronto. The other reason is because while he's a tremendous passer who very rarely turns the ball over, he only scores 9.8 points per game and doesn't get the national press that a guy like Steve Nash gets.

With Ricky Rubio's injury forcing him to miss the Olympics, Calderon will be the gasoline that runs the Spanish National team's engine. Spain has an excellent squad with devastating big men like Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol and Serge Ibaka. All signs point towards a Spain vs. United States final, and while the U.S. should win, Calderon will have an excellent game.

Aleksey Shved!

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 07-11-2012 10:37 PM

I do think that had Jose been fully health and not gotten injured in the semi-finals in 08 and had Rubio not been playing with an injured wrist, Spain would've had a much better shot against USA in 08.

Everyone will think Joel Freeland is the biggest steal at the C position of the offseason. Dudes got game.

If Superman wasn't fictional and Batman was real, then I would be tall and dominating the paint.

Spain has immense size with Marc, Pau, and Serge.

Raptor123, we noticed how much you like Calderon, because every post you type is about Jose's greatness. But thread is not needed. However, it went offtopic, which is good thing.
I'm still angry on Warriors for puting Jasikevicius to play at SG back in the days... Guy was Nash type player.
Freeland will fail against NBA type Centers. Teletovic is PF that is somewhat soft and plays like SF. Kleiza > Teletovic.
Shved - admire how he plays, nba type player, way more athletic Rubio version.

how is Jose under the radar? I would think most people that watch the NBA somewhat regularily would know very well who he is. Plus he's been a big contributor to the spanish team for years.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. A 7yr NBA veteran who has played for Spain for what 10yrs +. How will he be a breakout player now. Maybe they should have named it "impact players" to look for in the Olympics.

I agree Fancy - bad list.

Seraphin imo is the only one who fits in the "under the radar"/"break-out" category.

IMO implies players that are going to take their game to a new level because of the Olympics.

Players like Diogu belong on the list - not proven commodities like Nene, Barbosa, and Calderon

You guys need to cut out the BS. If you don't like the thread, don't read it. Nothing wrong with this thread idea.

As for JC, I will enjoy watching him succeed. People in Toronto show this guy very little respect, I really hope he does well with Spain, then I hope he leaves Toronto to play on a better team in the NBA.

For those doubting his need to "breakout", well he still hasn't on this messageboard judging from all the incredibly inaccurate posts I read about him on here all the time.

Forums were created so people with different opinions could debate. If everyone said "Awesome," or "I agree" then we would have a very serious problem.
