"This is a great opportunity," Belinelli said during a media opportunity that followed a workout at ACC. "I come into a nice city like Toronto. This is a good team, (a) European team. It's a really great opportunity for me."

The six-foot-five Belinelli spent the last two seasons as a shooting guard for the Golden State Warriors. He was the 18th overall pick in 2007 but watched for most of his first season. Last year, Belinelli banked 8.9 points per game in an average of 21 minutes of playing time.

The Raptors traded Devean George and cash considerations to Golden State to land the 23-year-old Belinelli. The Raptors needed a three point shooter after shipping Jason Kapono to the Philadelphia 76ers for rebounder Reggie Evans. Last season Belinelli shot .397 from beyond the three-point arc.

Five times last season he hit for 20 or more points for the Warriors with a season-high 27 points against Atlanta. Belinelli garnered 11.3 points per game over his 23 starts.

Long coveted by Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo for his shooting ability and athleticism, Belinelli will face tough competition for the shooting guard spot. Point guard Jarrett Jack can also play the two. So will highly-regarded rookie DeMar DeRozan, a player the Raptors are projecting as a badly-needed above the rim flyer.

"I can shoot. I can create for my teammates," said Belinelli. "I can be a great defender. I can do everything, you know."

Belinelli said he reveled in the presence of fellow Italians Andrea Bargnani and assistant GM Mauricio Gherardini and predicted big things ahead.

"I talked with (Bryan) Colangelo and he told me this is a good spot for me and I can have a lot of opportunity to play. Now is my time to see what I can do. I want to be ready for that."

I'll agree with him on two fronts:

1) he can shoot
2) He can create for teammates

But great defender? Even i don't think that. lol

We don't have one great defender on this team. We have a couple good defenders and some decent-average defenders. I think he's in the Decent category. Better then most believe, but not great.

Good at everything... haha.
I think it's jut his lack of english that makes him make those kinds of statements.
I sure hope he's good at everything....

I get the feeling Hollinger isn't liked to much around here, but I still find his assessment of Bellinelli last summer interesting. I think he can be a solid bench player, but I don't see why people are saying he can be MIP of the NBA or anything like that.

Anyways, Hollinger's say on Belli last summer:
