Ulmer interviews Jawai

http://www.nba.com/raptors/news/jawai_073108.html

Quote:

Mike Ulmer: Tell me about your game?

Nathan Jawai: I do a lot of things good, but not great. I can score if I want to score. I like to rebound and bang bodies. I love to play physically. The defense, the shot-blocking has to get better. When I was in Australia, I scored the ball a lot more. Here it will be more of the dirty work, playing defense, blocking shots.
Quote:

Mike Ulmer: Have you ever met Shaquille OíNeal?

Nathan Jawai: No.

Mike Ulmer: He is as big as one human being can be. People call you the Aussie Shaq or Baby Shaq. What do you think of that nickname?

Nathan Jawai: I really donít like that nickname at all. Heís one of the best players in the league. I am not as big as him; Iím only six-foot-nine. I donít weigh as much as him. We have a different style of game. The only reason people called me that was that I could dunk the ball really easy. It was a nickname people gave me. I didnít like that nickname at all.
Nothing much but something new...

He's only 6'9? I thought Jawai was closer to 7'0. That doesn't bode well for him in the C spot here in the NBA. It's rare that a centre that small is ever successful in the NBA. :(

rapsfan087 08-01-2008 10:35 AM

He is just 6'8 (2.04 m).

But he has long arms and is strong like bull...

Superjudge 08-01-2008 11:05 AM

yep

he's a load.

Many players smaller than that or same size have become very solid players/contributors off the bench in the last 2-3 years. BC has probably seen that and thought he was i nthe same mold as Landry/Millsap/Davis/Maxiell and thought he'd become a very good 7th man like most of those guys have. If he can finish, play tough, and rebound he'll be fine. He looks like he has the athleticism and smarts to start anyway.

Major 08-01-2008 11:35 AM

6-9...wow.

I could've sworn he was much closer to 7 feet than that.

And I also didn't realize he hated that nickname so much.

Nice to hear he understands his role...and understands he needs to improve...always nice to hear that from a youngster

All youngsters say that.

Sports sites player measurements vary greatly(for example Bargnani has been listed anywhere from 6'10" to 7'1"). I trust that Jawai knows his own height.

dfunkie1 08-02-2008 11:58 PM

international measurements are done without shoes, so that could be a big reason to varying heights between players like jawai and bargs. jawai was probably listed at 6'8, but at the draft camp he probably bumped to 6'9''......

Happy I had Good Info

Think it is a case of him being like 6 ft 10 in shoes more or less. As for this interview it made me think that I do a pretty good job. Seeing as it took me a couple e-mails to know what ulmer should have know in that Nathan hates that nickname. I am proud of the work I was able to do with Searching For Nathan Jawai and this interview made me take a little more pride in that. There were a few thousand folks out there that knew more about Nathan than the person doing this interview. That made me feel happy.

Dunno if it's with shoes or without them.

Ok, you trust ... , and I trust too, but there are a couple of things:

1- Sporting goals beyond 2005: Play for my country and play professionally

This is from the link I put, so it looks like the info from that site comes from himself too.

2- 2.04 m = 6 feet and 8.314 inches. Near to 6'9. Although the site looks like updated, maybe the height isn't, who knows.

Major 08-03-2008 12:20 PM

Wikipedia says 6-10
ESPN says 6-10
DraftExpress says 6-10
NBA.com says 6-10
Yahoo! Sports says 6-10

Yet Raps.com says 6-9

Hmmmm

rapsfan087 08-03-2008 12:36 PM

Dunno, if one writes something and 4 copy and paste it, it's normal they say the same :)

Snooch 08-03-2008 03:36 PM

But Nathan Jawaii says 6'9"

I don't think major sports sites copy/paste from other major sports site. I would imagine that they pool measurement records from organizations such as teams, leagues or players associations.

BballWatcher 08-03-2008 04:34 PM

Elton Brand is only 6'8 but when he puts his arms up his fingertips match up exactly with the fingertips of Chris Kaman, who's 7'0.

There's more to just height, and if Jawai dunks the ball with great ease, as he says, he probably has very long arms.

Apollo 08-03-2008 06:56 PM

He could just have nice hops. Nate Robinson can dunk the ball with ease as well.

It could be, dunno, but still thinking that the NBA got his size measures from the Orlando camp and the others copied it from the NBA. I mean, it's normal that sometimes there is only a source, so they are going to have to copy from it.
