Smile Turkoglu signing should be celebrated

Quote:
Start with the fact that Hedo Turkoglu wants to be in Toronto and that his wife Banu loves the city, and Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo's latest signing is a strong move.

Go from there and factor in that Turkoglu actually wants the ball late in a game and knows what to do with it, then couple in the pick-and-roll possibilities that have hoop-heads all agog and try to come up with a downside to the team's free-agent signing.

Answer? There is none especially if you're thinking about life after Chris Bosh, which, you know, you ought to be doing.

Colangelo has taken what is essentially the first step of a makeover that will be undertaken when Bosh leaves either as a free agent or through a sign and trade. He has ensured the team will still be competitive.

Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani doesn't whisper 'championship,' but with pieces added after Bosh leaves, the foundation is there to play a style of basketball that will keep the team competitive.

Turkoglu, Bargnani, Jose Calderon and Player A and Player B sound a lot better than Bargnani, Calderon and Players A, B and C. Besides, this is only money.

Whatever this costs the Raptors in renounced free agents is irrelevant.

Shawn Marion isn't a difference maker, and in reality he and whoever else is renounced can be replaced, particularly in a buyer's market.

For a team that is preparing to see yet another franchise player walk away and have its collective psyche dealt yet another blow, having a guy like Turkoglu who can play and actually wants to be in the city is something to be celebrated.

I have to agree. Although one thing i don't agree with is this guy's almost guarantee that Bosh is leaving. What if BC can do something with the bench and we win 45 games next season and get to the 2nd round?

I think he's just talking worst case scenario. Come to think of it that is not celebratory at all!

I'll celebrate when I see the completed lineup BC assembles in October.

for now, I'll be 50/50 on the subject.

Maybe Colangelo is still trying to keep the Matrix? If he moves Bosh for a star SG and some other strong bench pieces then that would make room for Marion to stay and play at the 4.

Shouldn't Turk play the 4 and marion play the 3?

just because of height?

How? The MOST the Raptors would be able to offer is the $1.8Mil BAE to 1 player and minimum salary to any others.

It'll take years to re-build the bench. This isn't a 1 year fix. They'll be over cap for a long time if Bosh and Bargs re-sign.

Thats why its so obvious that Bosh is gone, BC understands that either Bosh will renounce the raps or ask for max money, so why not sign the best free agent on the market whose in his prime and coming off a season where he played a role on a NBA finals team.

Either Bosh signs for well under the max taking a paycut because he likes the nucleous with Turk or he walks cause he's not worth max money. Thank you BC for adding an asset whose value can outlast CB4, and not named Jose or Andrea. If Bosh walks for nothing next year we'd be a Minnesota/Memphis/Sacramento type of team.

I feel like Bosh is the kinda guy that will stick around for less money if it benefits the team. But I could be wrong.

Finally someone choosing Toronto over some boring American cities. Overpaid? Maybe yes, but when he signed with Orlando for 38 M for 6years, most Orlando fans thought it was too much then.

Until he started winning games for them.
I mean come people on here complain when Bosh gets the ball in crunch time, now we have a game closer, and you guys are bickering, about it's too much.
Make up your mind.
Raptors fans are the most confusing fans in the NBA.

There is a downside...the bench

Who do we have signed as of today to be on the bench? Douby, Banks, POB, Roko, Jawai. Yuck!

I totally agree with the Blair article.

yes our bench is in need of improvement (the season hasn't started yet BTW). Sure there are holes that have to be filled.

But i fully think this move was made not just looking to next year, but more looking to the next 5 years.

I think we'll be better off.

You forgot about Reggie! Even with Evans though, I can't believe that Bryan is willing to go into the season with a bench thinner than rice paper. Triano was reluctant to go to the bench last year, I don't see how there won't be some additional tweaks.

well i don't think marion will stay, anyway marion is better rebounder than hedo and if hedo plays 4, he can't play the ball like he did in orlando.

if marion stays, it could be useful to move hedo to 2 and marion at 3 in the rotation to get some mismatches.

hedo can also play at 1.

that's one of the big reasons why he is getting that much money.

Exactly. Big IF there's a way to keep Marion too, (i.e. MLSE uncharacteristically let's us go over the cap and pay tax), Marion 3, Hedo at the 2, and for defensive, they switch...Marion guards the 2 Hedo the 3.
