Default A tribute to Sam Mitchell

Despite what little success he did have, let's remember that he walked into a horrible situation, was learning game-by-game how to coach, and was a source for endless sound bites over the years.

He wasn't the best coach, but I'd still have a beer with the guy.

Best of luck, Sam.

if you're not giving him a tribute, get the fuck off the thread, twerp.

he'll find a job come next summer. i hope he gets a team that isn't rebuilding or going thru an identity crisis. give him a few years and he will be recognized as one of the leagues best coaches. he's still a little green behind the ears, but his potential is great.

best of luck, sam!

Sam did all that he could with this team.

While i cant say i liked his style towards the end, he did grow over time.

I think Sam will make an excellent assistant coach which is where he needs to concentrate right now. Learn more about how to make plays instaed of just trying to motivate players to win or whatever you want to call it.

All the best, but the time was right!

Must've been like firing a familymember for incompetence. Maybe he was awefull, but he was family and you still feel some remorse dispite the decision clearly being right.

Best of luck mate...

I think the best job he will get is an assistant job. There is no way someone is going to be stupid enough to hire Sam. Whatever though I'll say good luck to him and hopes he finds a job just not with the Raps though

i'll certainly miss his repartee with the media, tho.

Thanks for this thread lang..things like a coach firing often can illustrate the level of class a team's fans have..it's nice to see a handful of members here are above mindless and pointless bashing.

Sam is a good basketball man and he gained a lot of good experience here. I suspect he'll catch on as someone's assistant in the short term(i'm thinking Larry Brown in Charlotte) but will be a head coach again. I don't know whether this was the best time or right move, but i have faith in BC to make the best decisions. I too would love to have a beer with Sam sometime to talk hoops.

This is a great opportunity for Jay Triano. I hope he's ready to lead this team to the level we've hoped they'd reached for this season. Good luck to Jay.

I like Sam and will miss him in Toronto. Our only coach of the year in franchise history. It was time for him to go but he's a pretty good coach/motivator and will coach again soon in the NBA. The fact is the Raptors are not talented enough or deep enough and the record is not much worse then where the talent deserves to be.

this team as currently constructed is not much better then a .500 team

I wish Sam well .... I'll miss his animated quotes, but I don't suspect that he'll be with out work for too long.

Best of luck Sam and good luck Jay .... your going to need it.

I felt like Sam became a better person throughout his time here in Toronto.
Just like we saw Bosh transform from a twiggy like player to a superstar.
Sam was this loud-mouth hard to deal with coach who hated everything and was calling out players/people left and right.
He eventually became a soft-spoken man who respected his colleagues and team.
And of course, his coaching skills improved overtime.
Unfortunately, it wasn't fast enough nor good enough.

Bye Sam. It was full of ups and downs. You'll definitely be remembered. For what? It varies...it could be for good or bad. But yes, you'll be remembered for sure!

I would be sorry for him, but then again, I wish when I get fired I get 2 1/2 years of salary ...
Sam has his strengths, and would probably make a good coach for a developing team like Oklahoma, but most likely he'll only get an assistant job next season, unless he decides to take a year off.

I don't think it's mindless or pointless. A lot of the people on this board have been calling for his head for a long time - and for good reason - so if they want to do a little happy dance, well...
