Triano: Would Like to Start Derozan, But He Needs to Earn It

Quote:
Tomorrow’s going to be DeMar DeRozan Day in the local fishwraps and on the local broadcasts back home.

Nothing horribly newsy, that’s for sure.

He is spending an inordinate amount of time working on his jumper, which is the one part of his game that could use some work.

Not surprisingly, Jay was pretty effusive in his praise of the rook. Jay also touched on the whole “does DeRozan start?” thing and while it sounds like it’s still the plan, it’s not cast in stone.

I presume this is as much the politically correct answer as anything but here’s the coach on the rookie’s chances of beginning the season as a starter:

“I’m not going to give it to him. In an ideal world, I’d like to start him to give him minutes and let him grow as a player with the starting unit but not at the expense of someone who out-works him throughout this training camp and the pre-season.”

Anyway, you’ll get lots more DeMar in the paper in the morning, and on the site overnight. That’s just a wee taste.]

For us? Not so much. If you’re looking for any semblance of hard news, I guess the only thing noteworthy today is that when we were let into the gym, we were greeted by the sight of Hedo Turkoglu getting up some shots dressed in uniform like the rest of ‘em.

(Well, not exactly a uniform, the shooting shirt and shorts everyone else had on).

I’m told he did a little bit of work, and Bosh got up some shots, too. But in a very, very relaxed manner.

Other than that? This morning was dedicated to drills and non-contact stuff.

Jay giving the "right" answer at training camp!

DeRozan has the right to lose the starting job. Don't expect it to happen.

ye we gotta make sure, he just dosent think the starting spot is his, he has to earn it, to prove to everyone he desirved it, but i think if belinelli was to out perform him in training camp he would styll start.

Yeah, Jay is starting to see the light on this issue. I too have been saying all summer long, to much derision, that even if he does begin with thoughts of starting Derozan he will eventually see the Wright choice. It's inevitable.

Glad to see that Jay is not just automatically giving DD the staring job. Hopefully they are not just words.

I think after the pre-season it will become very clear that derozan is heads and shoulders above wright, and that will put an end to all these ridicuolous conversations.

Does anybody *really* think triano would start derozan if he's not up to the job, just so he can develop him, and risk losing Bosh this summer? Does anybody here really knows what derozan can do? Based on the reviews from the summer league, I think there's a very good chance that derozan will exceed your low expectations.

Why don't we wait for the first regular season game to see who starts?

I completely agree with you about Derozan in that respect. I believe he will surprise many by what he is capable of doing right away offensively. However the starting unit needs an infusion of defense if we're serious about being a top 6-8 defensive team this season. I don't think you will find one person, who watched all of our summer league games, who come away impressed by Demar's defense. He was not very good, not aggressive enough and mostly stayed in the perimeter. I watched all 5 summer league games a couple of times and came away extremely impressed by how NBA ready he looked on offence. I think most of the draft pundits were caught sleeping when they pegged him as a work in progress. However as impressed as i was with him offensively i was unimpressed by him defensively and that was against summer league competition, not NBA. I hope he does surprise people in the defensive aspect of the game. But there is nothing there yet that would lead you to believe that he will. If he can prove otherwise, i'd be all for him, being on the floor with the starters.
