Default Triano: We'll give Amir Johnson as many mins as we can

There is not much to take out of the pre-season, but there can be some fun stat lines to look at.

Take, for example, Amir Johnson's line from Wednesday night:

25 Min 4-8 FGM-A 0-1 3PM-A 0-5 FTM-A 8 Reb 2 Ast 6 PF 2 STL 0 TO 0 BS 8 Pts

It is just pretty to look at.

"We will try to give him as many minutes as we can, but he's got to try to stay on the floor by not committing fouls," Triano said of Johnson. "But we like how active he is and he gives us something that we haven't had at the four/five spot in quite awhile."
Positive news for a producing improving player. Amir has looked great in the first couple of preseason games.

he can, but his foul rate plagued him his whole career, and unless he learns to defend without fouling, he won't stay long on the court ...

I'm not sure how "pretty" the 0 for 5 from the line is...

I haven't been impressed with him so far. He appears kind of awkward and even clumsy. Has anyone else noticed this guy's on the floor alot and doesn't seem to have very good balance on his feet?

BTW, he shouldn't play ahead Evans or Rasho and they're gonna play limited minutes. I would guess that there is going to be approximately 24-25 minutes availabe for the backup bigs. And most of those should go to Evans & Rasho.

our 2nd tier big men are bad at FT's. If a lot of the plays is to go to the rim aggresively, they gotta learn how to shoot FT's.

I like Johnson. He brings to the table exactly what we need - an athletic big who grabs rebounds, brings energy and plays solid D. And he's young enough to grow with our core guys.

Sure AJ can play the 5, but he looks like a stick person compared to other 5s. AJ is thin compared to CB4. The real question should be can AJ play the 3! At this time - maybe!
AJ runs like a 3.

The "kind of awkward and even clumsy" comment has some merit, this kid was still growing a couple of years ago and probably isn't done filling out his frame yet. So he might be clumsy from time-to-time.

I think it's entirely possible that Triano is pretty much saying the same thing, while at the same time showing that he has no problem being the bad guy that has the job of making the ultimate decision. You can only say it's up to the players themselves to a certain point. Because they are going to feel that they've earned more than they get just about every time. See Humps, and well, pretty much every borderline player that ever played here.

Hey guess what.

You can still only play 5 guys, so, how you say what you doesn't mean shit. Guys will be given as many minutes as Triano can, just like he says, and what affects that, is how effective they are.

You guys paint Triano like he's some soft guy, why? Because he doesn't talk trash like Mitchell did?

I bet you he's more of a hard ass then Sam was. I think it's more how you follow through, than how you state your case.

But then again Bjjs, I don't know anymore than you, maybe he is a softy?

It's possible that he is a hardass. He did say that he learnt a great deal from Sam. How to be a hardass had to be in there somewhere.

I was just fucking around.

But I'm not a big fan of Triano. The whole nice guy thing... I think that's played a big role in his rise to being head coach of an NBA team. Being Canadian helped.

SJ, I remember you mentioning how from 2 degrees of seperation you heard Triano is really nice to "his" guys, and not so nice to others. That isn't a good thing imo when it comes to winning bball games. Essentially, he plays favourites.

But like you said, we both don't really know anything.

I will say that Triano seems like he's really focused on succeeding.

Unless BC hit it out of the park this summer, and all the pieces come together and just win out of the gate with little to no turmoil this season, I would say the key to this season comes down to how Triano creates internal competition within the team, and if he has the balls to finish games with players who might not be the "popular" choice.

"We'll let Amir Johnson earn as many mins as he wants. We plan to initially give him 4 minutes as the backup PG, then he'll get 2-3 at the backup C. In the second half, he'll start at SF, and his defense will come really handy in the closing minutes where we plan to use him at SG. And maybe we'll find a little time at the 4, just in case Bosh needs rest. Do I think playing so many positioms will mess with his head? No - basketball is a simple game, the objective is to put the ball in the basket, and you can do that from anywhere on the court. It's not like I have any plays he has to remember ... "
