Exclamation Triano raises eyebrows with crticism of DeRozan

From Doug Smith:

Quote:
Thereís a good chance weíre going to find out what young DeMar DeRozan is made of over the last quarter of this season.

Listening to him and watching him the last little while and especially Tuesday night, thereís no doubt heís ticked at his coach and the feeling, right now, is mutual.

You donít hear Jay ever criticize his players too publicly, especially one specific one and when he dropped the ďI didnít think he was playing very well or very hardĒ on us, it raised some eyebrows.

(Warning: This is not strange, nor is it new. Players get mad at coaches and vice-versa a handful of times a season, just like Iím sure you all get miffed at your bosses every now and then).

Anyway, DeMar told me after that, yes, heís frustrated (as if him booting things at the end of the bench and sitting there stone-faced for the rest of the game didnít give him away) and, yes, he has to get better.

But will he? I donít think heís a sulker and Iím told his work ethic hasnít changed since the start of the season but it will be interesting to see how he reacts.

I know heís never been through anything like this Ė length of season, quality of opponent, his role Ė and no one can say with certainty how heíll come through it.

I've been disapointed with his game of late....he's been a non-factor on offense for weeks now which we can't have from that position if we want to be good.

Jay trying to light a fire. I hate when players/coaches use the media, but the frustration sounds like he has tried everything else.

Why not take him off the starting lineup?

"OK Demar, here's the deal! We're going to give you a whole bunch of responsibility, but no reward! You get to guard the best opposing wing player every game, but we're not going to let you attack him back on the offensive end because we got to get Bosh, Bargs, and Turk they're ball. Oh yeah. We're never going to let you finish games out regardless of how you play.

Now go out there and have some success!!"

Very disappointed to hear that he hasn't changed his work ethic since the beginning of the season. His game is not polished, I guess that's why he wanted private personal workouts leading to the NBA draft. In the same time span, Tyreke Evans also leaving after his freshman year in college, welcomed all competition for workouts leading to the draft. According to team reports, he destroyed all players during the workouts which can be seen in his outstanding rookie season. Its nice having a young atheltic wing player for the future, but who else could Raptors have chosen:

Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Darren Collison, Omri Casspi, Rodrigue Beaubois, Blair.

I think Smith is implying that his work ethic is great, and that it hasn't changed. So in essence, that's a positive thing. It's been an up and down season for DeMar, though I'm not ready to concede defeat just yet. I'm not about to make the comparison, but T-mac's rookie season here wasn't all that impressive either.

Certainly not writing him off! But Rookies need to be handled differently. Maybe he had too much to soon.

Nothing wrong with rattling his cage a bit and getting him focused.

Oh come on guys, the guy is averaging like 2 ppg in the last little while?

he's probably the least productive SG in the league. Triano has every right to be mad, rookie or not.

He has hit the rookie wall. Bosh is gone, thus other teams can crowd the basket. The good thing about Demar is when he gets blocked, he is not afraid to take it in again. However, he claimed and many posters said he was Heir Canada. He ain't no Heir Canada.

he's not good but I didn't expect much and didn't want to pick him
he's so afraid of defenders and a SG with no range
all I can do is hope he improves, but he has to show me and the team something

This would be a great argument.... except for the fact that Sonny is only 1 year older and doesn't seem to have a problem playing defense and taking shots within the flow of the offense.

DD ISN'T VINCE CARTER.

He's not here to be our saviour. He's not here to fill the SG spot and score 25/night.

What he IS here to do is learn the game and play smart and hard every game.

This isn't 5 years ago when we we just trying to struggle for 30 wins and "develop young talent". We're trying to make the playoffs and we're trying to WIN EVERY GAME... which means that if you're not pulling your weight you're sitting.

Before Demar gets too pissed he should ask Belli what HE feels like.

You want your PT back young man? EARN IT.

I hear ya guy but it's a culmination of a lot of things, not just the last handful of games.

DeMar hasn't been getting a fair shake from the coaching staff in terms of playing time and his role on offense. I feel bad for DeMar - ever since day one Triano's had a Joey Graham leash on him. No matter how well he plays on a given day relative to the Weems and the Wrights, he hasn't had the opportunity to close out games. My question to the coaching staff is how do you expect this cat to grow and develop into a player you can rely on if he hasn't experienced the moments that shape great players?

DeMar has every right to be frustrated. I only hope that he channels this frustration in a productive way instead of letting it build up and take him down. That part is huge.

Weems has played well, but he also comes into the game when two of hedo/bargs/bosh are out and the team is looking for guys like him to shoot the ball.

He also sees a lot of defenders who seem to have no idea who Sonny Weems is. That defense Lebron played on him a few games ago, that's the defense Sonny seems to be going up against almost every game, nonexistant.

But kudos to him, he keeps knocking the shots down.

I'm just not sure how he'll do in the playoffs. I have a feeling we'll really see Weems struggle in the playoffs.

Derozan though...I'm just confused as to what his role is supposed to be exactly, and I'm sure he is as well.

Yes, you're right.

What I should have said was that Sonny has only 1 more year of NBA experience than DD.... and he only played in 12 games last season when he was with DEN.

He's relatively young too... but he seems to be "getting it" a lot faster than DD is.
