Default Triano on PrimeTime Fan590 says X's and O's not relatively important

He looks like he expects to return. He claims to have a good relationship with BC. He had a tough adjustment period going from the "nice" guy in a supportive role, to the guy that makes all the hard decisions.

What really interested me was the way he repeated something I guessed at the other day. He said that when he began, he ony really had the X's and O's, and he fell back on them. But things really turned for him when he "slid over from the X's and O's" and learned how to manage the players, push the right buttons, and communicate the goals of the franchise with them. So he pretty much declared from his learning experience, that X's and O's are a small part of the job.

Finally, I liked that he expressed a philosophy that stressed defense. I don't know if that's any huge change, but that is one area in this league that is tough to get results with, and I'm just glad that as a "player's coach" he does not just put it on the backburner. Real improvement will start with improvement there. If there's one thing that became abundantly clear this season, they have to completely buy into that.

It's one thing to talk "D" and another thing entirely to play it. We didn't see nearly enough of it when Jay took over. If what they were doing out there reflects Triano's defensive philosophies then holy shit they're in trouble.
Maybe with a full training camp he can implement some of those "X's and O's" he is now glossing over.

Dann.... when Jay took over the team was completely different than it is now.

With a few better pieces we've seen improvements in quite a few key areas.

It wasn't too long ago that people were saying that Jose was "incapable of playing an up & down game" and that he was "an unavoidable liability on D".

If Marion and Bosh are back next season you'll see even more improvement on BOTH ends of the floor.

I truly believe that.

TORaps:
I think they'll improve as well, provided the roster stays the same or (hopefully) gets better. I should have said "after" Jay took over.
The defense was atrocious for the most part though. I don't understand what they were trying to accomplish. They over-played the opposing wings to one side, trying to force them into traps/doubles that were never there. They constantly switched on picks, creating brutal mis-matches, without even attempting to fight through or over. The game in Phoenix where Shaq looked 22 again and CB4 ended in drag was bizarre. Where the hell was the double?
That being said, it was a short learning curve for Jay and a tough job to take on given all the changes and injuries.
I expect he'll be back, with some upgrades at the assistant coaching positions and the team will be much improved next year.

I think just throwing the X's and O's out there doesn't mean they will be implemented as planned. The coach can't expect the players to get into his head and understand. The coach has to get in each player's head and find connections between them and him, and between each other. And then, I am guessing, as an oldtime student of a much more loosely-controlled game, that the X's and O's take care of themselves very much at that point. And if you look at the way this team was absolutely lost on both ends, and in terms of individual roles; and then see sudden success on both ends within roles that made sense, then you can almost pinpoint where Triano stopped falling back on what he knew best, and started learning the real art of coaching in the NBA.

With that said, I don't know if he's exactly the guy I want back if there's a big overhaul of the roster. There's a real strange situation where it's clear that on all fronts they failed, but continuing with largely the same core might be the best way to at least start the season. I just think this team as it stands could be much closer to what BC would have liked to have started with last season. Who knows?

This is where being an NBA coach can burn guys out. If you're PJ, Sloan or Popovich you can bench anyone who doesn't follow instructions. If you're some lame-duck sucker whatcha gonna do when guys are sabotaging the plays?
To me if you're going down, go in flames. If the players don't want to play the way you tell them to then sit their sorry asses. See what kind of contract you'll get with no P.T.!
Maybe Triano is the guy who can strike the balance between taskmaster and child psychologist that's needed to coax these bitches to play the right way.
Then again, maybe he's not.
Time will tell.

Yes lets keep grouping them all together and keep comparing them to the GREAT AND NICE AND INNOCENT hockey players.

I absolutely hate it when people call basketball players soft or bitches because they don't act like fucking idiots fighting all of the time. Basketball is a graceful, meaningful sport, sure some players are bitches with their flops, but just because you play basketball instead of hockey, it doesn't make you a pussy. ffs get out of her Superjudge.

I think I may begin cheering against the team at that point. I'm serious too.
