No way, everyone expected raps to be where they are now in the East. But if we end up in the top 4 in East, I'd say Triano is eligible for COY because that means we've exceeded our expectations.
Mike Woodson or Scott Brooks definitely top 2 candidates, especially Scott Brooks for what he has done with OKC

I'd say Triano should be mentioned for COY but stands no chance of actually winning it this year, just like how Bargnani should get mentioned in the MIP debate for his improved efficiency and defense, even though he also has no chance of actually winning it.

Right now I'd say the Brooks Brothers are leading both races - Scott Brooks for Coach of the year, and Aaron brooks for MIP.

I think Woodson, Brooks, McMillan and Triano are fair candidates for COY this season.

Phil Jackson doesn't deserve it because the Lakers are stacked. You could mention Mike Brown but I'd say Cleveland is the LeBron show and he's in charge of that team primarily.

I'd say Popovich deserves an honourable mention this season like every season because he has a roster of decrepit aging players and a fading Duncan around 10 games over .500.

I'd also say that Stan Van Gundy deserves a mention - although he's a dick and he dresses like a used car salesman, and he has a stacked team, Orlando is a very good team and they are well coached.

I'd say Vinny Del Negro in Chi-town is vastly overrated.

Unless we win 5-+ games Triano ain't winning jack. It's gonna be Brooks or Hollins

It would be nice to see... success equals recongnition which equals respect throughout the league. Just ask Sam Mitchell.

Phil Jackson has no shot.
Yes Jeff! That's what im talking about

funniest thing i've heard all day.

one of the top 4 teams in the NBA going to get it, however i'd like to see the OKC coach get it.

You know what else is funny? We're not just top 4, but we're top 2 since Dec. 18. So that's a month and a half of bad basketball we played, which is 100% expected and acceptable considering new faces.

I think if we finish strong, and possibly crack top 4, JT gets it. I think he deserves it.

Breaking into the top 4 in the east is the only way Triano even gets into the conversation. We're neither good enough nor exceeding expectations otherwise. Too many other good candidates.

I'm watching Suns - Kings and the broadcasters just named their top 5

Brooks 1, Sloan 2, and Triano 3

Good on ya jeff.

Scott Brooks and Triano would be my choices. Adelman HAS done an amazing job too though.

Here is the list of recent COY.

Year ----- Coach --------- Team ---- Result -- Standing ---- Previous year
200001 Larry Brown ---- 76ers ---- 5626 -- Atlantic 1st --- 49-33 (+7)
200102 Rick Carlisle ---- Pistons --- 5032 -- Central 1st --- 32-50 (+18)
200203 Gregg Popovich - Spurs ---- 6022 -- Midwest 1st -- 58-24 (+2)
200304 Hubie Brown ---- Grizzlies -- 5032 - Midwest 4th --- 28-54 (+22)
200405 Mike D'Antoni --- Suns ----- 6220 - Pacific 1st ---- 29-53 (+33)
200506 Avery Johnson - Mavs ----- 6022 - Southwest 1st - 58-24 (+2)
200607 Sam Mitchell --- Raptors --- 4735 - Atlantic 1st --- 27-55 (+20)
200708 Byron Scott --- Hornets --- 5626 - Southwest 1st - 39-43 (+17)
200809 Mike Brown ---- Cavs ----- 6616 -- Central 1st ---- 45-37 (+21)

Those stats indicate that we need either of the followings to get COY.
#1. Division Champ (around 60 wins and better record than the previous year) or
#2. 20+ wins from the previous year

If we only rely on the stats, #1 group in this year will be...
Mike Brown and Phil Jackson.
But they will need more wins than last year to get COY, and it won't be easy.

#2 group will be...
Scott Brooks (OKC) (23-59 in 2008-9)
Lionel Hollins (MEM) (24-58 in 2008-9)
Jay Triano (TOR) (33-49 in 2008-9)

Scott Brooks will be able to achieve 20+ wins, I think. I doubt Hollins and Triano can get it.
Again, if we only rely on the records, it will be hard for these 3 coaches to get COY.

Nate McMillan (POR) (54-28 in 2008-9)
Rick Adelman (HOU) (53-29 in 2008-9)
Mike Woodson (ATL) (47-35 in 2008-9)

Mike Brown won it last year. No back to backs on your list.

In the running imo:

Jay Triano- Tor
Scott Brooks- OKC
Mike Woodson- Atlanta
Nate McMillan-Portland (look what he's done in Portland with half a roster)
I'm going to have to go with Mike Woodson even though I think McMillan deserves it more, he probably won't get it.

Funny fact that Sloan has never won it despite his lengthy NBA coaching career. He might have a good chance this year if they can keep it up till the finish.

BUMP

Seriously, people, it's time to start giving Skiles credit. Yeah, Brooks is great and definitely deserves consideration. But Skiles is a worthy candidate.
