The final piece of the puzzle that is the Raptors roster soon will be filled.

Carlos Delfino's name has been linked more often than any other, but at this stage in the off-season it's of little consequence to a team that has been overhauled like no other in the franchise's history.

Delfino remains the odds-on choice to rejoin the Raptors because the team can use its remaining exception, known as the Bird Clause, to financially fit the swingman under the luxury tax threshold.

Delfino's strengths are his ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim and to play both guard positions.

But one has to wonder how minutes will be distributed if, as it's expected, the Argentine does resurface as a Raptor.

As July makes way for August and as teams prepare to wrap up their off-seasons, the retooling of the Raptors makes Toronto one of the most intriguing propositions in the East.

Cleveland added Shaq and some complementary pieces; Boston lured Rasheed Wallace, but lost some key members of its supporting cast; Orlando added Vince Carter and an unheralded banger in Brandon Bass.

The Cavs, Celtics and Magic figure to represent the elite in the East.

There's no reason why the Raptors can't finish fourth, which would be a first for a team that soon will celebrate its 15th season in the NBA.

Atlanta, last season's No. 4 seed, kept point guard Mike Bibby and added more scoring punch in the form of Jamal Crawford.

As explosive as the Hawks will be, they did address a need for experience and defence in the frontcourt.

As long as Dwyane Wade stays healthy, the Miami Heat will contend for a playoff spot, but Miami's depth is a concern and the team's financial picture doesn't exactly bode well.

Lamar Odom's name keeps getting bandied about and he certainly has ties to South Beach, but many believe it's all based on posturing because Odom's heart remains in Los Angeles and the Lakers.

Philadelphia will score, but one has to wonder how rookie point guard Jrue Holiday will handle the rigours and responsibilities of an NBA season.

Of all the off-season moves engineered, the one that has somehow been lost amid the changes is Andre Miller's move from Philly to Portland.

Chicago will miss Ben Gordon's offence and late-game theatrics and Detroit has assembled one-dimensional pieces.

That is why the Raptors have the potential to get home-court advantage in the post-season after missing the playoffs for the first time in three years.

How Jay Triano gets his team to play defence and how he defines roles will go a long way in determining how far the Raptors will go this coming season.

There are seven new faces on the roster, and potentially eight if one adds the final piece, and two new coaches in Marc Iavaroni and Alvin Williams.

GM Bryan Colangelo hasn't changed the core of Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani, but he has addressed virtually every need that became obvious in the aftermath of last season's 33-win season.

Sometime this week, the Raptors officially will welcome back centre Rasho Nesterovic, a serviceable big who will come off the bench and provide an interior presence.

The Raptors could use another small forward, a scorer and suitor for Marcus Banks.

This year's team has the potential to get out of the opening round at a time when making the playoffs simply isn't good enough.

That's how good a job Colangelo has done.

Triano and his staff must now meet the challenge.

i don't understand this writing trend that has every sentence laid out as a new paragraph.

what's with that?

it makes articles disjointed and hard to read.

staccato writing irritates me, apparently...

Doesn't he mean they did NOT address the needs in their front court...?

Either way barring an epic implosion from one of Orlando, Boston or Cleveland best case scenario probably is fourth for this team. Fourth or fifth place gives us second round playoff potential in my opinion, and I still think if we enter the playoffs on a roll we could make some noise against any of the big three teams.

A thread along the lines of this one have been posted many times, it's basically stating that the Raptors could place 4th in the east..

and look at macleans now... it went from a great, informative and well-written magazine to a trashy tabloid-esque piece of garbage. it's practically unreadable, and there's more celebrity gossip news than anything... bah... peter c. newman must be glad he's not there anymore...

this is what i have been saying!! the Raptors have a chance to make noise this season as i don't really think the magic, c's and cavs are much better if at all than they were last season and the other teams are rebuilding as well... our starting rotation is pretty much what it was last season with Hedo being tossed in and JJ or AW or DD adding to the 2 spot... team defense will define the level this team achieves...

Didn't we finish 4th in 2007 when we won our division?

Coud be? For some reason i thought we were fourth. My bad.

Either way he makes it sound like we've never had home court in the playoffs.

Frank always writes like that. I don't think its a trend, I think its him. He just seems to take fragments and jot them down. I doubt he went to university or if he did he didn't take many writing courses. No Professor would accept that.

Anyway, I agree with him. 4th or 5th seed seems right. Its the best case scenarios unless one of the big three teams gets crippled by injuries.

i hate reading off a computer, especially a 13' monitor, so i find it easier to read paragraphs when they're broken up like that. if i write over three paragraphs, i'll do the same. luckily for you, i keep it short

I agree to an extent - the beginning (about Delfino) and the end (Triano/8-new-faces/good-job-Colangelo) should have both been contiguous paragraphs. That said, I think the middle part was correctly broken up into discrete one-line paragraphs.

I wonder if he initially had the first and last parts as complete paragraphs, but broke them up once he saw that the middle 10 sentences were all pretty much in need of their own paragraph.

Anyways, it was an interesting observation.
