Exclamation Toronto Sun: A mistake to start DeRozan

Quote:
If Wright's knee regresses and the Raptors are forced into force-feeding DeRozan into the starting unit, then the team is in trouble.

DeRozan needs time and now is not the time to thrust him into a role he is clearly not equipped to handle.

Damon Stoudamire wasn't the starting point guard Brendan Malone wanted to line up in the backcourt when the Raptors began their expansion season in 1995.

Isiah Thomas was enamoured with Mighty Mouse and Stoudamire would emerge as the team's first floor general.

Marcus Camby was too frail to bang in the post.

Tracy McGrady had the length and athleticism, but he had no feel for the game and no concept on how to be a pro.

Vince Carter was the exception and even Chris Bosh needed time.

Morris Peterson was nurtured in a culture when the Raptors had veteran leaders and was allowed to develop at a pace that ultimately had Mo Pete starting a playoff game as a rookie.

I agree,

"Wright has an edge coaches can't teach.

Wright knows that stopping the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade is next to impossible.

But he knows how to make perimeter players work, even if they go off for 30 points"

Come opening night, if demar is starting he will get molested by their starting sg.

you're right, but Triano also knows that his team defensive cohesion isnt where it needs to be either, that always exposes perimeter guys, and that can further exacerbate the issue. I really hope they don't kill this kids confidence right away

If you believe Wright's stats when starting at the 2 vs 3 I would like to see Weems get the nod, but my gut says start Wright and have Weems back up Turkoglu. I dunno...let's just get the season going and see what happens.

Damon did start and the point is that GM often pushes for their prized pick to start even when they're not ready.

yeah, but my point is that there's no connection between the two. Some rookies start, some don't, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. More recently, courtney lee and batum both have started for 50+ teams, and batum got ahead of arguably more talented players on Portland's roster.

I have no idea if starting derozan is a good thing or not. I'm pretty sure that what damon stoudmire, vince Carter and moris petterson did has no signficance though.
And I'm 100% sure that colangelo and triano would gladly sacrifice derozan's rookie season if it meant a better season for us. This is not building time for the Raptors and everybody knows it.

Ultimately, if Triano decides to start him, I see no reason, at this point, to argue with that choice. And if somebody does, I'd like to see some basketball thinking, not just a lame comparison with things in the distant path.

There is a connection. They're both Raptors rookies who were prized picks of their GM and who were rightfully or wrongfully thrust into the starters role.

I can't stand Ziccarelli's inability to craft a full paragraph in his stories, but he's right about this.
DeRozan isn't ready to start and getting abused by other teams starting 2's isn't going to do wonders for his confidence. The first team needs better D and better outside shooting from that position. Hopefully Wright can fit that bill. DeRozan will be better suited coming in against other back-ups and trying to be an energy guy.

I'm pretty sure Carter came off the bench to start the year.

Wright hasn't played with the team in a competitive game and Beli is not a better fit than DeRozan in the starting line up
so we're left with Weems

anybody see the sick pass AP made to Sideshow Bob last night?

So you'd want Weems to start? Once Wright gets up to fitness and plays Friday then he should be good to go come Wednesday night.

I read the article, I just don't see how derozan is a "prized" anything, he's just a #9 pick. Not to mention that you can't compare a lottery team to a team that's trying to win now. I've seen this theory from time to time on this forum too, that colangelo is the one pushing triano to start derozan because it's his pick, and that ranks among the most stupid things ever said on this forum.

Reeally derozen is not even closeto being ready to start, teams with good sg's will just take advantage of the kid. I don't see how he is prized by any means at this point. He has had only 1 year collage ball and he was only realy good for half the year. Derozen should not start. Unless wright is compleatly winded after 15 min of play then he should be one one starting. Derozen vs bench sg is much better for the kid because at least he will be able to somewhat contain his man.

I've been saying that he shouldn't start from the get go.

Antoine will be ready.
