Raptors Toronto Sun: Last Chance for Andrea

Very true! Shit or GTFO!

Quote:
Recent events have made that clear.
Assuming the maddening Roman sticks around until whenever the NBA starts up again — no certainty, but a likely assumption — he will have one more chance to validate Bryan Colangelo’s faith in him.

With 7-foot centre Jonas Valanciunas — he of the massive upside and gaudy statistics, particularly when facing off against those his age — waiting in the wings, the Raptors will finally have another option in the middle sometime down the line.

If newly installed defensive taskmaster Dwane Casey can’t solve the Bargnani riddle and get 2006’s top selection to compete with passion and purpose — particularly defensively — Bargnani will be out of chances.
Bargnani has lasted this long because scoring 20 points a game on decent percentages as he did this past season (21.4 points on 47.1% of two-point attempts, 34.5% from three) takes talent.
But if one’s flaws so thoroughly trump his positives, as has been the case with Bargnani (the team is out-scored and out-rebounded by a wide margin when he is on the floor) the options are simple.
Adapt.

Or pack your bags.

If Bargnani doesn’t get it under Casey, he likely never will. Former coach Sam Mitchell drew Colangelo’s ire when he didn’t treat Bargnani with kid gloves. The same won’t happen to Casey, who has the same contract term as his general manager.
Bargnani will be Casey’s biggest challenge. His skills are not suited to the former Dallas assistant’s defensive schemes, particularly his stifling zone formations, the ones that caused so many problems for opponents this post-season.

Interesting analogy, jeff...

And it seems that every season Andrea has had to prove himself.

1. His first season when he was a relatively unknown chosen first overall.

2. His second season trying to build off a steady rookie season.

3. Third season trying to prove that the season before was a fluke and that he is a better player than he showed the previous year.

And last season as seeing if he had what it took to be a franchise guy. Now he has to show not only the media, but himself that he is good enough to stick around and be the focal point of a winning basketball team.

Has there ever been a player like andrea? So gifted offensively and so inept at the other end?

Believe or not, Andrea is actually a pretty good post defender...

If his game and Effort wasn't so flawed he wouldn't have to.

I wouldn't say good, I would say decent. But the problem is his defence isn't the only problem, its his rebounding too.

He's an ok post defender (1 on 1) but he's not a very good defensive player on the whole. He doesn't rotate quick enough, he doesn't move his feet well, he doesn't fight for position, I can go on and on.

On one level it seems that defense just moves too quickly for him, almost like he's over thinking.

Andrea Bargnani couldn't have been in a better position. An Italian GM and assistant GM that were in love with him. If he gave effort and showed interest in improving at rebounding he'd have a home here as long as they were here. But even BC is losing his patience, which speaks volumes.

An Italian GM and Assistant GM? Really? What does that have to with anything?

And he has shown a dedication to improving. To bad he only focuses on his offensive game.

yuppers!

There are occasions where he's defended the leagues elite and held his own... gasol, howard come to mind...but yes he's awful as a help defender

Bargnani actually played well in the zone D.... Unfortunately there is going to need to be a major defensive upgrade at every position for Bargnani to please his critics.

Actually he was pretty abysmal in the zone D as well.
He stood on the left block and watched the opponents fly to the rim right AND left.
Actually it didn't matter to him whether they were attacking the rim or going for a rebound.
All that moved was his mouth piece after the ball went through the net.
Yeah, but don't tell any other teams, cause perhaps they're blind or will take the words of analysts who haven't seen a single Raptors game.

It's going to be a long off-season if we continue to have Bargs posts ...

It was a long season of it, why would you expect anything else? People love to fuel the excessive hate. It's one thing to dislike the player and consider better options, but to outright discount his positive contributions as negligible is sad. We have a rebuilding team and so many can't get past a mentality of pushing certain players out. Newsflash: rebuilding takes time and all players look better and more valuable on winning teams. I for one am excited to see what Casey can do.... hopefully he can instill a better defensive foundation and energy for many Raptors including specifically Derozan and Bargnani.

Go Raps.

Didn't think we needed another Bargnani thread.......

Quote:
You may recall a post from a few months ago where Kevin Pelton had written that the Raptors were last in the league in payroll efficiency. Basically, they didn’t have very many wins in comparison to the total number of dollars on their payroll. Today, we have a post from Arturo Galletti over at Wages of Wins, that shall infuriate you a little more.

According to Galletti, Andrea Bargnani is the second most overpaid player in the league. Nestled between Michael Redd and Yao Ming, Bargnani’s wins produced value is -6 according to the study, worst in the NBA. The next worse wins produced value is Darko Milicic’s at -2.8. What’s more? Each of the top seven players on the overpaid list outside of Bargnani were seriously injured or traded during the season.

Think about that: Redd played 134 minutes this season while Yao logged 91 minutes. Bargnani? A cool 2,353 minutes. Too cool for his own good, apparently.

Quote:
Somehow, this doesn’t entirely shock me. And at the exact same time, it blows my mind.

As I said this morning, there’s plenty of room aboard the bandwagon for #TeamJonas.

Seriously though, this is where I hope in earnest that this is the season Bargnani puts the pieces together. He’s too talented to not, right? Okay, maybe not. If Toronto fans know anything, they know that talent and potential don’t mean anything without heart. Come on, Bargnani. If not now, when?

I don't like Bargs, but there is a lot more overpaid paid dudes in the nba...

Like: Arenas, B Diddy, Biedrins, Joe Johnson,....

I'd still have Bargs over Turkoglu 10 times out of 10.
