Default Toronto Star: DeMar DeRozan a starter by default

Quote:
"I would love to not start DeMar; the position isn't given to him, and right now, just due to injuries, it's his by default and I want him to earn that spot," Triano said Saturday, while admitting he still has DeRozan in his head as the team's fifth starter.

He's only saying this because DeRozan had his worst game as a rap yesterday... & so it fires him up

The Raptors had hoped Wright could have done some contact work Saturday to let him make his debut Sunday afternoon. But, being extra cautious given the circumstances, they'll let him get another four practices in to see how the knee responds before the final exhibition game Friday night.

The team then has five days before the Oct. 28 season opener.

"I need to see him play in games and he needs to get that game conditioning," Triano said of Wright. "He's staying in shape and lifting and getting healthy; we have to put that knee under the wear and tear of a game and see whether it'll swell up again. We've got 10 days to figure that out."
sorry but you left out some good info about Wright

SG position was wide open going in and nobody impressed enough for a prolonged period of play to take the starting role. I've been disapointed by Derozan, Beli and Jack. They've all shown flashes, but it's been in fits and starts and extremly inconsistent. Add to that Douby sucks and Weems has peetered out.....disapointing so far.

I liked derozan, he gets to the ft line a lot, and his FT shooting is much better than advertised at draft time. As a defender, he's going to be a big improvement over parker imo, maybe it will take a month or so, but he will surprise many with his defense.

but the worst danger is for him to think he's the starter no matter what, and my guess is that triano is trying to set the stage for a competition

So, your still convinced he will remain our starting guard than. Even though our starting unit lacks defence and it was mentioned that Demar kept losing track of his man in the defensive zone. If he starts at guard for more than 3 or 4 regular season games out of the gate, i'll be very surprised.

Gotta pretty much agree with all that. Bellinelli seems to be very hesitant and unaggressive at this point. He's made some pretty brutal turnovers so far and i don't think that's done his confidence any good. He needs to take the bull by the horns and go all out. It looks like he will take a little while to get comfortable here, but i'm confident he will eventually.

Weems i absolutely love, he's slowed a bit sure but so has everyone. He's still confident and one of the most aggressive Raptors out there and i still think he will be the biggest surprise of the season for us. He has an explosiveness in everything that he does and he can become a great player in due time. He just needs a little Hopla tutelage first. I'm glad to see Hopla is back even if only temporary.

Love Derozan's game, he's getting to the line constantly and that bodes very well for his future. He's at least showing he has some toughness. He's got some really nice offensive skills but still needs to get stronger and more explosive. He tried dropping a two handed dunk yesterday and got turned back badly, the power is not quite there yet. He needs to grow into his body a bit yet. He's coming along very nicely for a 19-20 year old. Like i've been saying all along though, we are putting way to much pressure on the kid putting him in the starting lineup. We don't need heavily experienced NBA starters knocking his confidence down as well as a coach needing him to perfect his defensive coverage before he even gets his ears wet. He needs to come off the bench and be allowed to make mistakes without the huge magnifying glass he's under, playing in the starting lineup. He really has got off to a decent start.

Jack will keep getting better all season. He did that last season as well. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his shot the first part of last season. By the second half he was averaging 17 PPG and pretty much took T.J's starting job. In the meantime he just has to get everyone involved and play decent defence. Wouldn't mind seeing them put Banks in once in a while too to see if his speed and defence can effect the game.

This article was online before the game yesterday, so I don't think it was yesterday's game specifically that made him say it. But I do agree with your general sentiment: he's trying to fire derozan up, not let him get comfortable or feel like he doesn't have to work to maintain his starting job.

Yup....& Honestly if DeRozan can get to the foul line lets say 5-7 times per game which he totally can he is a lock for the starting 2 guard position.

Is that supposed to be a starting lineup?
Because Turkoglu and Bargnani will get demolished by the starting SFs and SGs in the league, and Evans is smaller than Bosh, so why put him at C?

personally i think the guy who brings the best defensive presence will most likely become the lock to play guard because more than anything else that's what is required by our stating unit. Wright is the most likely candidate but another guard who can really bring it defensively is Sonny Weems. He could end up stealing the job from everyone in due time if he continues to improve at both ends of the floor.
