Default Toronto Star: Bargnani's Defensive Poise Bodes Well For Raps

Maybe now we can start to lay to rest all the comments about Bargs not being able to defend or is not a good help defender. Bargs has low BBIQ bla bla bla. I've been saying since mid last season and especially after J.O. left that Bargs was becoming our best defender, and a very good help defender. I guess it just takes a long time for masses to notice.

This small excerpt is from The Star today:

"Iavaroni whose concentration on the defensive aspect of the game is intense, was impressed last week in Ottawa with Bargnani's ability to defend off the ball, to be in the right spot and make the right play to help".

Bargs is long and mobile and covers alot of territory and as he plays more our defence will improve. Our biggest problem last year was our perimeter defence allowing too much penetration so quickly, that our bigs didn't have enough time to rotate. Better perimeter defenders this year will give our bigs a better fighting chance. I believe Bargs will become a monster for the Raps defensively this year and a big reason why we will be a top 10 defensive team this year.

The bigs got a bad rap last season. You could see a huge difference once Marion closed down the perimeter some, along with Jose recovering health-wise. I expect the frontcourt to be the best frontcourt this team has ever seen, and the improved defense on the perimeter is going be play a big part in the turnaround.

Criticisms of Bargnani's help defense last year were justified... if that has improved over the offseason that's a great sign!

He was unfairly criticized for his man defense last year, which in fact he was among the team's best in that category.

I think many here have recognized his above average man defense, at least at the C spot. His help defense was way below average, and improvement in that area could be huge for us. While the perimeter defense was bad, there's no denying that andreea had troubles deciding when to leave his man to help, and his indecision was often costly.

Still say the metamorphosis occurred over the year, last year. Your defensive ability and IQ doesn't just improve over the course of a summer when you hardly play. It's a cumilative process over time and by the last couple months of last season, he WAS a good help defender. He was the one coming over and forcing attackers baseline and out of bounds, he was the one coming over and blocking shots, he was the one racing to wide open perimeter players as they were about to shoot. He was the one flashing the top of the key trying to prevent guards swinging the play. People just didn't notice.
