Default Toronto Star: Of Bargnani and getting drilled in the head by a projectile

It's (an early but) great sign if Bargs is getting more aggressive. Perhaps the same aggressiveness will lead to improved rebounding as well.

Doug Smith's Toronto Raptors blog

Quote:
Jay on Bargnani:

There were a couple of times during camp where he got the ball in the post and he turned and he just went right to the basket. In the past, he would look, put it on the floor maybe once and settle for a jump shot thinking, I dont want the contact.

I think hes got a lot of confidence in his strength and his physical ability now that he actually looks for contact when he drives to the basket.

Quick, call the pucks, they could use all the help they can get, I hear.

Now, Ill wait until I see it in actual games before Ill truly believe it because the kid has had a way of shying away from the heavy lifting in the past.

But there really is something kind of new about him.

Great to hear, I'd love to see this translate into the regular season

There was also a part in this article that mentioned that Wright and Weems are not likely to play in the first pre-season game tomorrow. Is Wright hurt?

Sounds like Andrea's walking around with a chip on his shoulder. Guess that's what $10 mil per will do for ya!

Andrea finds that same swag on the court and it can only be good news for this team. If he can come into the season with a couple solid moves in the post to keep the defense honest, he'll be unguardable.

It's always been though hasn't it? He's simply had to progress in being able to take on a larger role. I don't get why there's always this feeling that fairy dust has been sprinkled on him. He's done a good job of working at being a solid, all-around NBA player. This is the year he's arrives on schedule in terms of being able to take over in a game or two or ten. The biggest thing will be how he meshes with the entire new cast though. I think there's a good chance that he finds a role that works well within the larger framework.

Great to hear. He averaged 6rpg as a starter last season and if he get bring that up at least to 7rpg i'll be happy. 18PPG, 7RPG 1.5Blk is what i project his numbers will be and i think his overall D will improve as well.

I agree.

I've always seen his progress as steady.... a few plateau's, a few injuury issues, but for the most part, he's com ein as advertized.

Remember, when he was drafted he was seen as a 5 year progect..... that often gets ignored in our ADD afflicted world.

he did take a pretty big step back in year number 2. Injuries and position change were a factor, but it definately was a fall coming off a promising rookie campaign.

just saying.

Taking a big step back is a big part of of taking on a bigger role. Year two was very much like being a rookie all over again in many ways.

He's a great example of how people want instant results. There's a reason why rooks and even many sophs just didn't see the floor in the past. Now the process of being NBA ready happens much more in full view. In year two, Bargnani learned that he needed to do more than he first realized in terms of getting bigger and playing bigger. If he hadn't figured that out, then were looking at a Darko or something right now.

Good news. Always love hearing stuff about Bargs playing aggressively/like a big guy. Just hopin' he can keep it up during the regular season, especially later on in the year when he's banged up and probably a bit lighter.

That's definitely true. My frustration (and I'm just speaking for myself) is that sometimes he seems disinterested - or at least his heart wasn't "in it". It's one thing to have skills develop over time, but I was hoping he'd be hungrier to win.
Several folks blame Mitchell - and perhaps they're right.

But I want to see Bargs go after it more - have that burning desire to WIN. Maybe this is the year.

Okay, for sure there’s no Bosh and no Turkoglu going to London and Jay made it sound about 99.999 per cent certain there’d be no Wright and no Weems on the trip either.

Mitchell deserves credit for force feeding him the need to change his game in order to succeed in the NBA, nothing more, nothing less.

Showing the desire to win without the means of doing so is a tough position to be in - another reason why young players had their PT curtailed in the past. I would agree that he had times when he looked awfully lost, but I would also guess that he knew he was dealing with an awareness that he needed to be bigger before he could play bigger, especially after having had the appendectomy.

As important as Hedo is, Bargnani is manning the middle to hear stuff that suggest he's looking for contact and playing tough is nice to hear. I hope he keeps it up. He's very important to their success this year. If he can play at the level of Rashard Lewis I think it will go a long way towards making Bosh consider staying.

maybe reggie evans beating on him in practice is already starting to wear on his game

good sign but i'll be more impressed when he starts playing without a UFC mouthguard. All bosh's fault of course for setting a poor example

Who cares what he wears? If he wants to protect his teeth, so be it.

Yeah cause that is a real determining factor into who tough a guy is or not out there.

That's what'll impress you? WTF? Sometimes your comments are baffling and i don't know if you're kiding or don't know much about basketball and make comment, just for the sake of making a comment. And bitch for the sake of bitching.
