Default Toronto should go after Rudy Gay

Apparantly Memphis might be willing to trade him to shed salary. Considering we have a huge TPE I think BC should at least make an attempt to get him.

It shouldn't be hard to find a home for a ridiculously athletic swingman that averages 20 ppg and 6 rpg, even one that will make between $15 and $19 million every year through 2015. So answering the question, "Who takes on Gay and his salary?" isn't really all that difficult.

We'd have to give up Bayless and Amir as well along with that TPE at the very least. And that's the very, very least.

I'd love to get Rudy Gay. Especially if we can get Irving or Walker and get a real Center either through trade or signing.

The author is just speculating and thinking out loud. No different than what we do here, really.

But that deal's not a foregone conclusion, and neither is it a sure thing that Memphis will even want to trade Gay. Assuming they fall short of the NBA championship this year, they may feel that if they were good enough to get this far without him, imagine how good they could be with him.

That would be a no brainer for us imo. Especially if we can stay in the top 3 in the draft where we can draft a PG. As much as I like Amir, Davis allows us to move him.And if he's moved you re-sign Evans.

That's true but that rumour has been going on throughout the playoffs, even announcers were talking about it.

Yes. It was even raised here days ago in one of the playoff threads. It's a scenario that almost automatically pops into one's head when they consider the current state of the Grizz. That is, their recent success + the need to keep Gasol + need to keep an eye on costs. It's just one of those inevitable questions.

I wasn't saying there is any harm in talking about it hypothetically. I'm just saying the article doesn't necessarily increase the likelihood of Rudy's availability any more than you or I saying he is on the market.

i'd love to have a talent like rudy gay here. i just wouldn't want a 2nd tier player here making 15-20 million a season. i couldn't believe it for my own eyes when i read that he was making that much money. dude's worth 10-12 million at most. i can't wait until there's a hard cap and non-guaranteed contracts.

Memphis has shown it doesn't need Gay to go far. The team needs to stay below the luxury tax with Gasol and his defense at this point more than Gay, especially with the teams recent commitment to Randolph. I would expect the Grizz to want at least the TPE and pick or possibly Davis in return to back-up both Randolph and Gasol. Of course my preference would be to keep Davis and use the TPE and future pick(s).

If we did get Gay, that would mean we'd have Gay, JJ, Weems, Wright and Kleiza.

If we had the chance to draft Williams, would you do a Rudy deal if offered?

+1

Good player, but the contract is a little scary.

We should've just taken Gay instead of the complicated doer in the draft. You can't keep snatching at it. Set a goal and carry it through, that is a big defensive C.

If you're investing in Gay, he's the final piece to your puzzle considering his salary. Unfortunately, he is not good enough to be the final piece to a 20-win teams puzzle.

If we can get the #1 pick it would be interesting though.

Irving
Derozan
Gay
Davis

Lol no shit we should go after him, any team that doesn't have LeBron, Kevin Durant, Melo, Granger or Crash should go after him as well..

Umm I don't think we would be able to keep our Pick if we traded for Rudy...

I'm thinking only:

Gay

4

James Johnson, Amir, PTE & our pick is the closest to an even trade IMO

I would do this trade though...

Why would the Grizz trade for one of our PF's when they are locked at that position?

Let's see were our pick is tomorrow before we do something like that. Besides, the Grizz need cap space and shed salary for Gasol, why would they want Amir (PF that you said they dont need) and Johnson? Although Memphis isn a lock at PF when you have Powe as a back up and Haddadi as backup center, the advantage with Davis is he can play behind both the way the Grizz style dictates. Anyways, I couldn't see MemphIs doing that trade above just cause of the salary return. If the Raps took Williams the thread is moot. If the raps took Irving (crossed fingers) then I think Rudy would be a nice addition. In the meantime, like NY, Miami, lol Boston now, and a few other teams we need a defensive minded center. The only advantage the Raps have is the ability to over pay for one.
